The Comms Council UK, which represents the United Kingdom’s national Unified Communications and Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) phone industry, has today announced that they’ve appointed new Chair, Tracey Wright, to replace Eli Katz, who, after 20 long years of service, stepped down as Chair on the 6th of January 2025.

Little-known fixed wireless ISP Kijoma Broadband (Kijoma Solutions), which generally covers rural parts of West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire in England, appears to have vanished (including email and website) after appearing to suffer a service outage that started just before 9am yesterday morning.

Customers of budget internet provider TalkTalk, specifically those who take their Pay TV service, have had it confirmed that the ISP will be phasing out their single billing integration of Sky’s NOW TV streaming service (i.e. customers will no longer be able to add NOW TV Plans to a single bill from the ISP). Netflix integration was also removed last month.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed that broadband usage across their UK network increased by 10.5% in 2024 (higher than the c.9% recorded for 2023 and 2.5% in 2022) to total 103,590 PetaBytes (PB) of data, with December 2024 being the “busiest month of the year for broadband traffic” (1st Dec 2024 was the busiest day).

Alternative network provider Freedom Fibre, which are busy rolling out a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks across different parts of England (North West and Midlands), has today announced that they’ve become the latest operator to sign the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC).

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network ISP GoFibre has today announced that they’ve begun to expand their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network into the rural village of Ovington in County Durham, which forms part of their state aid supported Project Gigabit contract with the government (this also includes nearby villages such as Hutton Magna and Gainford).

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G mobile services across “over” 1,500 postcodes in the East Midlands city of Nottingham (Nottinghamshire, England), which should mean “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability.

The Group behind mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which in the UK is a virtual operator (mvno) on EE’s network, has this morning announced a “strategic reorganisation” that it says aims to “drive efficiency and foster global growth“. This will include, among other things, “plans” for global expansion into Spain and the USA during early 2025.

Infracapital-backed network builder and UK ISP Ogi, which is rolling out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across South Wales (100,000 premises are already covered / RFS), has today announced the completion of their network expansion to connect businesses in Cardiff’s city centre economic gateway.

The UK Government and Openreach (BT) have today confirmed their latest four UK contract awards – valued at £289m+ – under the Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme, which we leaked last week (here). Some 131,000 premises in rural parts of North and Southwest Wales, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Devon, Somerset, Essex, North East England and Worcestershire will benefit.

Rural focused alternative UK ISP Quickline, which is building a gigabit-capable broadband network (full fibre and wireless) across parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has collaborated with the Lincolnshire Institute of Technology (LIoT) to help support 500 students through a bursary scheme (i.e. money will help with study, travel and additional childcare costs).

A new newspaper report has revealed what digital infrastructure investors think of the UK’s current market for alternative broadband networks (altnets). Suffice to say that, after a difficult couple of years, there still seems to be a fair mix of both strong pessimism and optimism for 2025, which perhaps reflects the different states of the market’s many providers.

National network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers broadband speeds of up to 1800Mbps to homes and businesses via hundreds of ISPs, has now covered 17 million UK premises. This includes more than 4.3 million premises in “rural and hard-to-reach areas“.

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and globally via a mega constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has published an annual 2024 Progress Report that summarises their recent upgrades and reveals how their future V3 (GEN3) satellite will be able to handle 1Tbps (Terabits per second) of capacity.

European satellite operator Eutelsat has confirmed that their OneWeb network, which is the global constellation of broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that is still partly supported by the UK government, suffered a “temporary, 48-hour outage” over the New Year period that started on 31st December 2024.
