Openreach Offer Optical UK Data Links at Speeds of 1.6 Terabits Per Second

Network operator Openreach has this week launched a new enhancement to their Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA) portfolio, which will enable UK data centres and telecoms operators to deploy higher-capacity connectivity between sites with support for multiple wavelengths each carrying up to 1.6Tbps (Terabits per second) of capacity.

Openreach Expands UK Rollout of 10Gbps Speed Full Fibre XGS-PON Broadband UPDATE

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they intend to expand their ongoing pilot of 10Gbps capable XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which over the next 12 months will be made available to “more than a million premises” across the United Kingdom. But a third of its full fibre network could be covered over the next 5 years.

Network benchmarking giant Ookla (Accenture), which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband and mobile Speedtest.net service, has cleverly used data collected from Smartphones using Starlink’s 4G mobile satellite data connectivity to map the size of their individual Direct-to-Cell (DTC) beams in the real-world.

New National Planning Policy Framework Lends Support to Broadband and Mobile

The Government has published its new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) for England, which finally appears to have laid the foundations for planning authorities to give “substantial weight” to the benefits of “maintaining or improving network coverage, capacity, reliability and resilience” of modern gigabit broadband and 5G mobile networks.

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network operator GoFibre, which is deploying a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of Scotland and Northern England, has revealed that over 1,000 “customers [are] now connected” to their recent roll-out across the coastal Scottish Borders town of Eyemouth (the town is home to a population of c.3,600).

Apple released the latest iOS 27 Beta 6 software to developers yesterday and those who have updated their iPhone’s to the new firmware are finding that it finally shows a “5G+” symbol (or icon, if you prefer), when in areas covered by a 5G Standalone (5GSA) based mobile broadband network.

Government Hands £13m to Boost Wi-Fi on UK Trains and Satellite Broadband

The UK Space Agency has this morning announced that they’ve spread £13m of public funding across 16 new projects under the ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) programme, which covers everything from deploying on-board Wi-Fi on remote Scottish railways to improving the availability of 5G and future 6G mobile networks – typically via satellite-based internet connectivity.

Virgin Media O2 Has Provided 550,000 UK People with Free Mobile Data SIMs

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has revealed that their partnership with the digital inclusion charity, the Good Things Foundation, has so far helped to provide more than 550,000 UK people – those experiencing financial difficulties – with free mobile broadband data, calls and texts via SIMs supplied through the National Databank.

Hampshire-based alternative network toob, which has deployed their own gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across South England and also harnesses CityFibre’s network in other UK areas, has suffered a blow today after investor INPP “elected not to commit further capital” to the provider and handed most of its original £24.1m investment off to debt holders.
