Consumer site Expert Reviews has posted the winners of their annual ‘Best Broadband Awards 2021‘ event, which surveyed their readers in an effort to identify the best UK Internet Service Providers across a range of different categories. But the overall winner, by a comfortable margin, came out as Zen Internet.

New research from professional services firm PwC has forecast that the productivity and efficiency gains enabled by the rollout of ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) technology will drive business, skills and service change worth £43bn to UK GDP by 2030. The healthcare sector is also expected to see the biggest impact from this.

UK ISP and energy provider Shell Energy has this afternoon confirmed that they’ve reached an agreement to acquire some 465,000 phone and broadband customers from the Post Office’s telecoms division, for an undisclosed sum (previous estimates put the value of this deal at around £80m to £100m).

Three of Openreach’s street cabinets, and an unrelated mobile phone mast in Chelmsford (Essex), have been seriously damaged after arsonists attacked them this morning, which has sadly left almost 3,000 premises (homes and businesses) without access to either broadband or phone connectivity during a pandemic!

Broadband ISP BT has just informed us that almost all of their BTSport TV customers will, from tomorrow, be able to access a range of new ‘Matchday Experience‘ features, with accessibility for the first time via Android mobiles and tablets (this builds on existing Apple / iOS device availability).

A new Bath-based network operator called Brsk Limited has just cropped up with tentative plans to deploy a new “open access” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to UK homes and businesses, albeit initially starting in the “north of England” rather than the south, where it’s based.

Mobile operator O2 has today announced that they’ve completed another successful trial of Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) tech, albeit this time working alongside the NEC Corporation, as well as using virtualised RAN software from Altiostar and hardware from GigaTera Communications and Supermicro, among others.

The UK Government (DCMS / BDUK) has confirmed a few more details about the future of their £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme to broadband ISPs, which is due to end on the 31st March 2021 but is widely expected to be superseded by a new programme with a fresh pot of “over” £250m.

Openreach (BT) has faced some criticism after it sent a letter to one or more of Northern Ireland’s (NI) local authorities, which appeared to suggest that the operator would have provided FTTP broadband to more premises than the winner of the £165m Project Stratum contract, had they won it instead.

Openreach (BT) plan to increase the wholesale price of their strongest maintenance level across almost all of their broadband and phone products (WLR, LLU, SOGEA and FTTC/P) for UK ISPs, although the change will mainly affect ISPs selling business packages with a stronger commitment to fault repairs.

The Government has posted a useful State Aid evaluation of the UK National Broadband Scheme (Superfast Broadband Programme), which identifies a number of strong benefits from the £1.9bn (public) programme that has so far helped to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connectivity to nearly 97% of premises.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which builds 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large residential (MDU) and office buildings, has reached a new agreement that will see their service being expanded to cover 8,000 homes from the Poplar HARCA housing association in East London.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has today announced that they’re reducing the standing pricing on two of their top Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages – 300Mbps and 900Mbps – by up to 10%. The provider is keen to point out that this move is occurring at a time when many of their biggest rivals have been hiking prices.

The North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) has announced that UK network operator ITS Technology have begun construction work on a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband network in the industrial town of Scunthorpe, which will be used to meet the demand for fast internet connections by the local business community.
