Email and Account Outage Strikes Customers of UK ISP BT UPDATE

Customers of UK broadband ISP BT are this morning reporting that the internet provider seems to be suffering from an outage of their email (BT Mail) and online account platform, which is preventing users from being able to login to their accounts and thus check or send messages.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today unveiled a shortlist of three potential winners for the ‘Internet Hero’ category in their forthcoming 2021 industry awards, which was last year won more by all the telecoms sector’s key workers for their efforts during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

H2 2021 Test of 5G Speed in Coventry, Leeds and Bradford, Nottingham and Sheffield

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published the first H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities and towns of Coventry, Leeds and Bradford, Nottingham and Sheffield. EE delivered the fastest speed and availability in most of the locations, but not all.

New and upgrading Full Fibre customers on UK ISP BT, specifically those who are signing up to their 500Mbps and 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages, will now also receive an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription “at no extra cost” for the first 6 to 12 months (normal price from Microsoft is £10.99 per month).

Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has published their latest Q3 2021 study of mobile broadband (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom, which found that EE “dominated the majority of the metrics tested,” but Three UK are challenging when looking at the latest ultrafast 5G services.

Gov Consults on UK’s Future Wireless Spectrum and 6G Needs

A new ‘Call for Evidence‘ is being launched by the Government today, which aims to inform their future Wireless Infrastructure Strategy (WIS). This attempts to understand the future wireless connectivity needs of the UK and how they can better support 5G mobile, as well as future satellite, IoT and 6G broadband technologies.

Public Funding Links 1,084 UK Schools to Full Fibre Broadband

The UK Government has today revealed that 1,084 schools in rural areas have now been connected to a gigabit-capable “full fibre” network as a result of the investment they started in 2019, which is continuing under their new £5bn Project Gigabit scheme. A further 884 schools are planned to be connected by March 2022.

Virgin Media O2 UK Conducts Third 2.2Gbps Broadband Trial

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has confirmed that they’ve conducted a third trial of 2.2Gbps download speeds on their upgraded DOCSIS 3.1 network, which this time took place in the cities of Edinburgh and Birmingham. Previous trials took place in the town of Thatcham and parts of Southampton and Manchester (here and here).

ISP Vodafone UK Extends Pro Broadband to Small Businesses

ISP BT Business Launch Cheaper UK Full Fibre Broadband Plans

UK ISP BT Business will today launch a set of cheaper “Full Fibre Business Essential” packages on their gigabit-capable and Openreach based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network. Prices for smaller firms and home workers (SoHo) now start at just £25.95 +vat a month for download speeds of up to 150Mbp (29Mbps upload).

Borderlink Detail Full Fibre Rollout for North England and Scotland

CityFibre Extend FTTP Broadband Cover in Peterborough Again

ASA Bans VOXI UK Mobile Advert for Misleading Price Claims

A complaint by rival UK mobile operator giffgaff has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a website ad for VOXI – the MVNO sub-brand for Vodafone – over “misleading” price claims, which centres around the way they advertised their 12GB data (mobile broadband) plan for £10 per month.

Delays to Rural ISP Gigaclear’s Full Fibre Rollout Reach Essex UK UPDATE

Gigaclear’s state aid backed rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Essex, which forms part of the wider Superfast Essex (SFE) project, looks set to suffer another delay due to issues of “contractor resource, the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and the lack of availability of cabinets.”
