Hampshire-based UK ISP Giganet has today launched two new phone services for their home broadband customers (i.e. Home Phone and Virtual Landline), which allows customers to keep their existing number and handset, albeit without the need for expensive BT phone lines.

Vodafone UK has today revealed a new range of “gigafast broadband” packages that will only be available via Openreach’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool (360,000 premises). In other locations you’ll connect via Cityfibre’s “full fibre” platform.

UK ISP EE has this week become the latest internet provider to adopt SOGEA technology (standalone copper broadband), which means that their “fibre broadband” (FTTC and G.fast) packages no longer come with a phone (voice) calls service attached. Just don’t expect to save much money.

Capita has today signed a new 5-year £8 million contract with Cheshire East Council in England, which will see them roll-out a Wide Area Network (WAN) to help provide data services for over 500 public sector sites (e.g. local councils, schools, fire and police service etc.) in the county. A new WiFi network is also planned.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk saw its internet traffic reach a new peak of 6.833Tbps (Terabits per second) at 21:25 last night, which is up from 6.488Tbps in June 2020 (here). The latest surge in data demand was driven by customers attempting to view the Champions League (football) final.

The latest independent H1 2020 study of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 87.3% of houses constructed this year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 83% in H2 2019), which rises to 97.6% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 96%).

Engineers working for Hull-based UK ISP KCOM have taken time out of their efforts to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in order to help dig the trench for a new water supply in the East Yorkshire town of Nafferton, which is being used to serve new allotments at the Nafferton Recreation Club.

Apparently you can never have too many alternative full fibre broadband ISP networks, so here are two more with separate plans to expand across the United Kingdom in the near future – Westnetworks Innovations (WestWiFi) and FACTCO (Ecodial). Both providers already have some presence in the market.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today discounted the price of their ultrafast broadband and weekend calls package, which for example drops their 108Mbps (10Mbps) plan to just £27 per month for the first 18 months of service (£51 a month thereafter). A number of other offers have also been introduced.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has somewhat comically included broadband ISP Virgin Media UK in their latest list of DMCA takedown notices, which as part of a crackdown against illegal IPTV services ordered Google to remove the provider’s online bundles shop from their search results.

Mainstream media reports have today claimed that a number of major private equity firms are exploring the possibility of making a joint bid for the whole BT Group, which could be worth up to £15bn. In response the operator has reportedly asked Goldman Sachs to update its bid defence strategy.

Ofcom UK has published their 2020 survey of broadband and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (78%) again, while Three UK were the same for mobile (89%).

UK ISP Trunk Networks (Leetline) has streamlined their line-up of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages on Openreach’s (BT) national UK network and also reduced some of their prices. As a result their top 900Mbps (gigabit) tier is now just £66 inc. VAT per month (down from £144).

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Wildanet has extended their network to the market town of Liskeard and claimed that it is now Cornwall’s (England) first location to benefit from the “fastest level of broadband speeds available” at 1Gbps, except its not and the fastest consumer package on their site is only 50Mbps.

Openreach’s (BT) long-running efforts to apply ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology to UK Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband ISP lines at ECI using street cabinets may have hit yet another snag, which appears to have resulted in the enhancement being removed from some lines.

After several years of difficult work Ofcom has this week officially completed one of their “biggest” ever UK projects, which involved moving Digital Terrestrial TV (Freeview) channels out of the 700MHz spectrum band to free up those airwaves for use by 4G and 5G based mobile technology in 2021.
