Customers on some of BT’s broadband and TV packages (both business and residential) have recently found that the bundled BTSport TV App has stopped working on Microsoft Surface (Go and Pro) tablets, which is despite the fact that they’re advertised as being supported. Part of this is because the UK ISP now considers them to be laptops.

Cityfibre UK has today revealed the first solid details of their plan to deploy a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTH) based broadband ISP network across the towns of Slough (Berkshire) and Swindon (Wiltshire), which will involve a commercial investment of £24m and £40m respectively.

Rural broadband developer Broadway Partners (aka – ISP Broadway Broadband) has today reached an interesting new agreement that will enable them to harness Western Power‘s low voltage poles. The deal will be used to support their on-going deployment of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) infrastructure to homes.

Greater Manchester-based UK ISP The 4th Utility has today secured a £25 million investment boost from DIF Capital Partners, which will be used to support the next phase of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband roll-out to residential properties (mostly new build developments).

UK ISP G.Network has reached a new agreement with the Bedford Estates in central London, which will see their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network being extended to cover much more of Bloomsbury’s (WC1) local residents and businesses “over the coming months.”

The Scottish Government has this afternoon revealed the details of their new voucher scheme, which aims to help “ensure superfast broadband access for all” by provide funding of up to £5,000 to help homes and businesses not in scope of either their R100 contracts or commercial roll-outs to obtain a 30Mbps+ capable connection.

The Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) organisation, which runs the joint network sharing venture between mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK, has moved to protect 4G and 5G based mobile masts by deploying SmartWater technology to forensically tag vandals who attack their infrastructure.

The Scottish Government has, as part of the wider Connecting Scotland programme, today put £15m toward helping a further 23,000 low income households, specifically those without proper broadband internet access, to get online. The extra funding will prioritise disadvantaged families with children and young people leaving care.

Part of Shetland Telecom‘s fibre optic broadband network on the remote Shetland Islands (Scotland) was only slightly, albeit knowingly, damaged last Friday following the discovering of a WWII era pipe bomb, which had to be made safe through detonation by a professional bomb squad.

Nominet, the UK internet domain registry, has today launched a follow-up scheme to “DevicesDotNow”, which is called REBOOT and aims to help get disadvantaged people get online by re-purposing unused (old or unwanted) devices, such as computers, broadband routers or other IT kit, in an efficient and cost effective way.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has completed another network extension, which this time sees 3,600 homes in the large Derbyshire village of Old Whittington – population of around 4,200 – gaining access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service.

Vodafone UK has today become the latest major home broadband ISP, after BT (here), to launch a second line service – “Work and Play” – to help support the growing push to work from home during the COVID-19 crisis, which is only available on their Openreach (BT) based FTTC “superfast broadband” packages.

The latest independent data has predicted that 2.07% (up from 1.8% in May 2020) of UK premises could be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network (this can stop you from ordering a new service), but some areas are being hit harder than others.

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has revealed the results from their H1 2020 study of 4G based mobile broadband performance (speeds, latency etc.) in the United Kingdom. Once again EE (BT) remains top of the pack with median average downloads of 21.2Mbps and one-way latency times of 12ms (milliseconds).

Earlier this year F&W Networks, supported by retail UK ISP division Hey!Broadband, began to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (here) to cover 5,000 premises around the town centre of Horsham (West Sussex). The good news is that they’re extending this to another 10,000 homes.
