Alternative ISP Highland Broadband (Lothian Broadband), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of the Scottish Highlands, has confirmed that they’ve worked with network partner ADTRAN to cover the Caithness village of Halkirk.

A useful new interactive map has today been published by Thinkbroadband, which rather handily provides a visual overview of broadband related roadworks across the whole of England and thus helps to see who is building near to your home. Plans are also afoot to expand the map’s coverage beyond England.

Alternative network operator Elevate (formerly Telcom and Luminet) has today announced that they’ve completed the deployment of a new full fibre “Hypercity” network across the city of Cardiff in Wales. The new network gives over 5,000 businesses access to dedicated internet speeds up to 10Gbps and over 4,000 homes access to speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Network infrastructure provider CommScope has today announced that they’ve started a new collaboration with Brighton-based Altnets (the company, not the sector), the telecoms procurement specialist. The aim of this is to “accelerate the UK’s full-fibre rollout, supporting Project Gigabit and the nation’s digital infrastructure“.

Hampshire-based ISP toob, which has deployed their own gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Southern England, have today announced that they’ve expanded the availability of their services – under their complementary partnership with CityFibre – to another 23 cities and towns across the UK.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2), specifically those still using some of the provider’s oldest routers (i.e. Hub 2 AC, Hub 2 and Hub 1), have recently become the latest group to receive a letter inviting them to upgrade to the HUB 4.0 (ARRIS TG3492LG-VMB) “at not extra” cost. This is because the old hardware no longer receives security updates.

Infracapital-backed network operator Fibrus, which is building a full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across rural parts of Cumbria (England) and Northern Ireland, has today announced a new 5-year agreement to deploy Nokia’s Deepfield solution across their UK network. This is a network monitoring, management and security solution.

The Devon & Cornwall Police (DCP) in England have arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of causing criminal damage to Openreach’s broadband network in the town of Falmouth over the weekend. The incident knocked out local internet connectivity to around 100 premises (inc. many local businesses) and could cost up to £100,000 to repair.

Mobile networks operators including EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK have warned that Ofcom’s proposals to change the cost of Annual Licence Fees (ALF) in the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands – used to support 2G, 3G and 4G mobile (mobile broadband) services – still do not reflect reality.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G mobile services across “over” 5,700 postcodes in the city of Manchester (England), which should bring “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability to the area.

You’ve done all the checking, so you already know the only viable network operator has listed “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband as being “available” to the property. But on the day of your install, the engineer tells you it needs a dig team and your ISP suggests you might have to wait nearly half a year for it to go live. Oh.. and there’s no other fixed line alternatives.

2025 Openreach skills training course for engineers

Openreach (BT) has opened a free five-day skills course in roadworks, signing, lighting, and guarding to Jobseekers in Bolton (more areas to follow). The course has been launched in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and is linked to the company’s commitment under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts.
