The North Yorkshire Police (England) have launched an investigation after a wireless broadband server, which helped to provide Internet access to the local area, was stolen from a mast located close to Newton-upon-Rawcliffe on Sunday 9th February 2014.

Consumers that own one of Linksys’s E1000 or E1200 Wireless-N routers (possibly other models too) should take note that the devices appear to be vulnerable to a mass exploit that compromises the router and then forces it to saturate all of the available bandwidth by scanning port 80 and 8080 as fast as possible.

Who needs YouView (IPTV) anyway? The BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Digital UK appear to be considering a third bash at the Internet based catch-up TV game (aka – Freeview Connect) after their last attempt, YouView, ended up becoming more of a commercial customer retention tool for the big broadband ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk and BT).

It’s already possible to make 2G based voice calls on-board flights (note: not all allow it though) and Ofcom has now launched a new consultation that aims to extend this by enabling the use of 3G (UMTS at 2100MHz) and 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Smartphones and related devices on a licence-exempt basis while flying.

Don’t blame the hybrid fibre upgrade. The Managing Director (Service Management) of BTOpenreach, Warren Buckley, has apologise to residents of Binfield Heath in Oxfordshire, which last year raised £60k to help roll-out a superfast broadband (FTTC) service in the area (here), following an up to 6 week long broadband and phone outage.

The £24.6m Connecting Shropshire project in England has revealed a new list of 25 telephone exchange areas that will benefit from an upgrade to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which should be expanded to reach 93% of local premises by the end of Spring 2016 (excluding the separate Telford & Wrekin).

Everybody has a right to complain to their supplier when something goes wrong but a new Consumer Action Monitor report from Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider, Ombudsman Services, claims that 40 million complaints (all sectors) went unaddressed because many people chose to “suffer in silence“.

Competition concerns with the Broadband Delivery UK project have again been raised after BT’s Programme Manager for the £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset scheme in England, Laurent Boon, rejected a call for the parish of Upottery to receive a “fibre broadband” upgrade, which it said would cost the equivalent of £2,000 per property.
