Residents of Aurora Springs, a new homes development in South Gloucestershire (England) that forms part of the wider Cheswick “Urban Village Concept” near Bristol, have complained to BT and the city council because their “village of the future” suffers from slow broadband access and some even have no access to a phone service.

UK ISP BT Tops 1.9m Retail FTTC Users as Broadband Customers Hit 7.11 Million

The retail division of BT has ended 2013 with a total fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base of 7,111,000 and that represents a stable growth of +150k in Q4 2013 (down slightly from +156k in Q3). The figure includes 1.9 Million superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +228k in Q4 vs +195k added in Q3).

Cable ISP Virgin Media has reduced the contract length of their broadband and phone bundles from 18 to 12 months, while also continuing to offer their “RED HOT SALE” discount that reduces the prices by almost half for the first six months of service (note: Line Rental is still payable at £15.99 a month or the equivalent of £10.66 when pre-paid).

Sky Broadband UK Grows to 5.127 Million Subscribers Despite BT Pressure

It’s been a difficult few months for BSkyB (Sky Broadband) but the operators latest Q4 2013 results have revealed that their broadband ISP subscriber base continued to grow by +110,000 in Q4 to total 5,127,000 (stable from +111k added in Q3). Churn also fell and ARPU grew but their unbundled (LLU) network expansion stopped.

One of the UK Government’s strongest advocates of mandatory network-level Internet filtering, MP Claire Perry, has told a Westminster eForum that modern ISP censorship systems are “far better, far stronger, much more effective and will not overblock” websites (i.e. wrongful blocking).
