A new survey of 3,345 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that UK consumers are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the reliability and quality of customer support provided by their current broadband ISP, with more expecting to switch (migrate) to another ISP in 2014 than in 2013.

The UK Prime Minister’s new Intellectual Property Advisor, Mike Weatherley (Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade), has threatened fresh legislation against broadband ISPs that “knowingly facilitate illegal downloading practices” and do not take steps to stop it. But it’s unclear what could be changed that hasn’t already been tried.

A new survey of 2,011 British citizens (aged 16-75) by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has reported that 43% saw more economic benefit in extending the reach of superfast broadband to all premises in the UK than they did from building new Nuclear Power plants, airports or high speed trains.

The Northmoor, Moreton and Bablockhythe Community Broadband Project in West Oxfordshire (England) has reportedly had its requested state aid funding of £200,287 from the Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) approved, although a supplier has yet to be confirmed.

Leaders of the Hampshire County Council have voted to release £9.2 million to help extend their state aid supported roll-out of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services from its current target of 90% to 95%, which of course mirrors the new national UK target.

BT has signed a £26.9 million deal with three companies – including Global Marine Systems, Orange Marine and A-2-Sea Solutions – to help build 20 new fibre optic submarine cables around the Highlands and Islands region, which will be used to deliver on the Scottish Government’s £264m Digital Scotland project.

The joint £12 million+ Central Superfast project between the Milton Keynes Council, Central Bedfordshire Council and Bedford Borough Council in England, which aims to rollout BT’s FTTC/P service to cover “around” 91% of local premises by spring 2016 (97% in Milton Keynes), has released a revised deployment map following new funding.

Fibre optic ISP Seethelight, which offers a 200Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) package to several parts of the UK via the Independent Fibre Networks Limited platform, has followed the big ISPs to announce a series of New Year price hikes of its own. On the bright side some users will be getting a 300Mbps upgrade.

BT might have dramatically scaled back its national plans to deploy 300Mbps+ capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology across the United Kingdom (here) but it hasn’t completely stopped and the next area to benefit will be the huge New Capital Quay development in South London.

The UK telecoms regulator has today made a few changes to its initial August 2013 proposal (here), which set out the introduction of a “simpler and more reliable” method for helping consumers to migrate between different broadband and phone providers.

The total number of global broadband subscribers in Q3-2013 has grown by 1.8% in the quarter to reach 670 Million (up from just 0.7% added in Q2). But the data also reveals that the UK has a 132.1% annual growth rate for fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P/H etc.) and that puts us top of the table.

Media and Internet giant Sky Broadband has today made a new Sky Wireless Booster device available for free to their new and existing UK customers. On top of that their standard and fibre unlimited broadband packages are being offered at half price for the first 6-12 months of service.

The latest survey of consumer satisfaction, which was conducted by the communications regulator with 6,000 respondents between July and September 2013, has found that Sky Broadband and Virgin Media both score the highest (71%) for broadband but TalkTalk is at the bottom on 62%.

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has today confirmed all of the changes that have been made to its Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme since the autumn trial. The vouchers have been live since earlier this month (here), although there have been a few small changes under the hood.
