Box Limited, an IT and technology sales company, has today announced the launch of its own satellite ISP called Broadband Everywhere. As with some other providers this new one also makes use of the SES Broadband Services platform, which offers internet download speeds of up to 20Mbps.

The government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office has this week launched a “market test” for its new Connection Vouchers Scheme, which is supported by the £150 million+ “Super-Connected Cities” (Urban Broadband Fund) programme and designed to help businesses cover the cost of installing a new superfast broadband ISP connection.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website advert for EE’s 4G (4GEE) based Mobile Broadband service after rival ISP BT complained that its claim to offer a “superfast” service was misleading because it didn’t meet the governments minimum speed definition of greater than 24Mbps (Megabits).

Arqiva has revealed a map of the first areas to benefit from the government’s £150m Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP), which was established as part of the 4G auction (800MHz and 2.6GHz) process to help build new mobile masts for those who live in areas of poor or non-existent mobile coverage.

In a surprise announcement BT has revealed that its UK consumer division, BT Retail, will be split into two separate businesses – BTConsumer and BTBusiness – effective from 1st September 2013. But BT will continue to report figures for BTRetail as a whole until the end of the current financial year.

The government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office, which is responsible for overseeing the national and £1.2bn publicly funded roll-out of fixed line superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services to about 88% of people by the end of 2015 and 95% by 2017, spent £5.979m on admin costs in the last tax year (April 2012 – Late March 2013).

Ofcom has confirmed that the 800MHz radio spectrum band will this week be made completely clear of the old Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services that use to inhabit it. The move means that major mobile operators from around the United Kingdom can now launch their 4G (LTE) services in the same band.

The UK government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, has written a new letter to local councils to confirm that she has reached an agreement with BT that should require them to reveal which areas will receive a superfast broadband (FTTC/P) upgrade as part of the £1.2bn Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme.

A new group called Lightstream Community Fibre (LCF), which appears to have cloned B4RN’s network approach in Lancashire (England, UK), has been setup to help bring a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband network to rural parts of the Ards Peninsula (County Down) in Northern Ireland.

The joint BT and state aid supported £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has just launched an official coverage map, which is designed to give locals a rough idea of when each specific area will be upgraded to fibre optic based superfast broadband (25Mbps+).

The debt infested Digital Region network, which was originally setup with around £100m of public money to help deliver better broadband services to South Yorkshire (England, UK) because BT had little interest in doing so, could need up to another £45 million to survive and has so far only got 3,000 customers!
