A new study from the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has revealed what everybody else already knew. Internet age verification checks do not work and children are thus registering on social media websites under false ages. Shock.

Gigaclear, which has installed several 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) networks in rural communities around England, has partnered up to adopt Fluidata’s Service Exchange Platform (SEP) that should give those covered by the operators network a greater choice of around 50 ISPs.

Broadband provider TalkTalk has confirmed that Chinese firm Huawei, which has recently suffered due to some high-profile concerns over state sponsored spying (here), now appears to be in full control of the ISPs network-level internet filtering service (HomeSafe) after US security firm Symantec stopped working on it over one year ago.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has officially leapfrogged Virgin Media to become the country’s second largest consumer broadband ISP after it saw a sharp acceleration of growth by gobbling up O2’s fixed line subscribers. As a result Sky’s latest Q2-2013 report saw related customers grow by +519,000 in the quarter to total 4.906m (up from +152k added in Q1).

Some of Sky Broadband’s (BSkyB) customers are angry after discovering that the ISPs recent and much-troubled migration of their email platform from Google (Gmail) to a new Yahoo! based alternative (Sky Yahoo! Mail) appears to have also damaged their Google Play store accounts and thus lost £100’s worth of digital purchases (apps etc.).

The influential Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which is a professional society for 150,000 members of the global engineering and technology community, has warned that the UK government’s move to force big ISPs into blocking adult websites “will be ineffective and harmful“.

Telecoms operator Vodafone UK has quietly slipped into our Top 10 UK ISPs By Subscriber Size table after last year’s £1.044bn deal to buy telecoms giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW) revealed that the group had 85,000 fixed line broadband customers (Q2-2013), which is down by -2k from 87,000 in Q1.

BT Group has today released their latest financial results to 30th June 2013 (Q2), which saw the operators retail ISP division increase their fixed line broadband subscribers by +95,000 in the quarter to total 6,799,000 (down from the +136k added in Q1-2013 and +122k in Q4-2012).

Business ISP Entanet, which supplies internet access and related services to a number of ISPs and businesses across the United Kingdom, has launched a special promotion that will allow their resellers to offer a free superfast broadband installation or migration on FTTC packages.

Mobile operator and ISP EE (Orange UK) has today reported that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base has grown by +10,000 customers in Q2-2013 to reach a total of 704,000 (up sharply from the +1k added in Q1). Meanwhile their 4G based mobile customers have doubled from 318,000 in Q1 to 687,000 now.

Budget internet provider TalkTalk has released its latest Q2-2013 results today, which saw them add another +8,000 broadband subscribers (down from 10k in Q1-2013) to total 4,071,000 customers. The number of consumers taking their Superfast Fibre (FTTC) product also grew by a steady +22k in the quarter to 95,000.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has today published a short health check of the United Kingdom’s drive towards making superfast broadband (25-30Mbps+) speeds available across the country, which warns that the future demand for 1000Mbps (Gigabit) broadband connections will widen the digital speed divide between urban and rural areas. So is it time for FTTH?

The government’s Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has today been criticised by a new select committee report for its late delivery of the Universal Service Commitment (USC), which aims to ensure that 100% can access a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps by 2015. The inquiry said this must now be “prioritised over increasing speeds“.

Satellite operator Eutelsat (Skylogic) appears to be feeling a strain on its broadband capacity after it began advising ISPs in the UK, and we assume the rest of Europe too, that their current top-end unlimited usage package would be withdrawn by the end of August 2013.

Sheffield-based Internet and phone provider PlusNet has announced that it will open a new office in Leeds (England) during October 2013 that should, over the next three years, result in the creation of at least 250 new jobs (making for a total of 1100 employees by 2016).

The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and Motion Picture Association (MPA) have won yet another court case that will force all of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to block their customers from accessing EZTV and Yify-Torrents, which were both found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

BT has just announced that they’ve been able to squeeze an additional 9 telephone exchanges into their national £2.5bn roll-out of up to 80Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband ISP products around the United Kingdom.
