The UK government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, could withhold an extra £250m of rural superfast broadband (25Mbps+) funding from local authorities unless they do as she requested and publish vital BT coverage information. The data is needed to help smaller ISPs (altnets) build their networks and access £20m of RCBF funding.

The government’s controversial strategy for protecting children online by requiring the country’s largest broadband ISPs to introduce network-level filtering of adult websites (here) has come under fire again after some reports suggested that “Web Forums“, “Esoteric Content” and possibly even bad language might be on the censorship list. Telecoms giant BT (codename “Remedy“) and Vodafone (codename “Gerontic“) are among several major telecoms operators that have been named by former NSA employee, Edward Snowden, as helping the UK Government’s Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) to snoop on more than 200 of the world’s transatlantic fibre optic cable links.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) have today reported their latest Q2-2013 financial results, which revealed that its total broadband ISP subscriber base had shrunk by -15,500 in the last quarter (down from +25.5k in Q1-2013 and +51.6k in Q4-2012) to total 4,475,000.

Ofcom has refused to apply “interim measures” that could have forced BSkyB to provide its Sky Sports 1 and 2 TV channels to BT’s YouView (IPTV) based platform on “fair terms“. Meanwhile the investigation into BT’s initial competition complaint against Sky will continue.

The latest anecdotal monthly study of fixed line consumer broadband ISP speeds in the United Kingdom has revealed that the average internet download speed during July 2013 was 18.662Mbps, which is up from 18.365Mbps in June. By contrast the average upload speed hit 3.338Mbps (up from 2.882Mbps in June).

Ofcom has published their annual 2013 Communications Market Report, which covers everything about the United Kingdom’s media and telecom industries. The study reveals that NGA / superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP services are now available to 73% of the country (up from 65% last year) and uptake has surged to 17.5% (up from just 6.5%) or 3.8 million subscribers.

The Lancashire County Council (LCC) has announced the beginning of Phase 2 in its £62.5 million state aid supported project with BT to deploy superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services out to cover 97% of local premises by the end of 2014 2015.

Mobile operator O2 (O24G) look set to be the first to take on EE’s rival network after announcing a 29th August 2013 launch date and the first roll-out locations for their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network, which eventually aims to reach 98% of the UK population (indoor and outdoor).

As expected BT’s consumer ISP division has today made its new BTSport TV service available to their customers, which among other things will be showing 38 live Barclays Premier League football and 69 live Aviva Premiership rugby matches. It’s also being offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages.

Cheshire-based ISP Vispa has announced that the business variant of its City Wireless broadband network, which offers internet connection speeds of up to 100Mbps (Megabits per second), has been extended to reach the “majority of businesses” in and around Warrington town centre.
