Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today launched a new 4G and 5G mobile plan to support UK people on low incomes, which is a low-cost data (mobile broadband), calls and texts (SMS) plan that is only available to those on eligible state benefits and costs just £10 per month.

The CEO of telecoms and broadband provider BT Business, Bas Burger, has written a new letter to critical national infrastructure customers this week, including the likes of lift operators and medical equipment, which warns them of the need to switchover to a digital phone solution before the old analogue (PSTN) service is switched-off.

The Leicestershire County Council (LCC) has revealed that their recently completed £1.5 million “GigaHubs” project has now connected 43 public sector sites (schools, libraries etc.) to a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network, which forms part of the UK Government’s wider £5bn Project Gigabit programme.

A new analysis of 149,187 consumer broadband ISP speed tests claims to have identified the top fastest and slowest cities across the United Kingdom. For example, Canterbury (22Mbps) in Kent is named as the slowest city for the second consecutive year, while the fastest was found to be Lichfield (359Mbps) in Staffordshire.

The new Labour-led UK Government has somewhat echoed the previous administration today by calling on broadband operators to “end the deployment of unnecessary telegraph poles” when rolling out new gigabit-capable networks. But they have “at this stage” rejected the idea of removing Permitted Development (PD) rights for poles.

EE) home broadband ISP and phone services may like to know that the UK telecoms provider is preparing to launch an “advanced” version of their existing Battery Backup Unit (BBU) “later this year“, which is said to be capable of “[lasting] for the full duration of most power outages.”

Mobile operator Three UK has today published their latest results to 30th June 2024, which among other things reveals that 4,900 sites (up from 4,700 six months ago) across 656 towns and cities are now live with 5G (62% population coverage) and the average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer increased to 30.5GB (up from 30GB).

Troubled mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which is a virtual network operator (MVNO) on EE’s platform in the UK, appears to have suffered a blow this week after the tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), filed a winding-up petition in the courts against their UK business on Monday. But Lyca says it was “issued in error“.

Rochdale-base broadband ISP Zen Internet has today become the first national provider to sign a wholesale deal that will enable them to sell services to premises covered by alternative operator Trooli, which has deployed a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 370,000 homes and businesses across parts of England and Scotland.

UK ISP LilaConnect, which following the VXFIBER acquisition is now part of Freedom Fibre‘s growing UK full fibre gigabit broadband network (here), has announced to ISPreview that they’ve just surpassed the milestone of 15,000 connected customers (up from 13,000+ at the end of June 2024). Take note that other ISPs also sell over the FF network.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just announced that they’re planning to launch their first symmetric 1Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP packages, albeit initially only in “certain locations” from April 2025. Some of the first premises to benefit will be those covered by their rural Project Gigabit contracts (here).

Customers of business broadband and hosting provider Fastnet are currently experiencing a “major, wide scale service outage” across their VMWare hosting platform, which is affecting web, email, DNS hosting including cPanel services, Virtual Datacentre and some other services. But connectivity, DSL and Ethernet services are said to be “unaffected“.

Hampshire-based internet access provider Onestream, which sells broadband packages using Openreach’s national UK full fibre network, has today announced a new partnership with Virtual Private Networking provider NordVPN that will give customers access to the VPN service “at a discounted rate“.
