Vodafone 4G and 5G OpenRAN Rural Mast

Mobile network operator Vodafone has announced a new collaboration with British semiconductor firm ARM, which is designed to help fast-track the development of new platforms (chipsets) for their future 4G and 5G based Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN).

Nokia’s Bell Labs research division has established two new world records in submarine optical communications. The first achieved a net data rate of 800Gbps (Gigabits per second) on a single optical wavelength at a distance of 7865km, while the second hit a net throughput of 41Tbps (Terabits) over 291 km via a C-band unrepeated transmission system.

Broadband provider FibreNest, which is the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) operator for Persimmon Homes‘ new build UK housing developments, appears to have introduced a new router for customers who are just joining the service. The new unit replaces their previous Linksys Velop system, although we’re unsure whether it’s an improvement.

Openreach (BT) has announced that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network now covers just over 1 million properties in Scotland, which is up from 949,000 in late August 2023 and 800,000 in mid-March 2023. The operator has also revealed the 20 locations with the best “ultrafast broadband coverage” on their network.

Nick Parbutt, the boss of network builder and UK gigabit broadband ISP toob, has revealed that the operator may have changed its strategy to focus more on growing customer take-up than on expanding their network coverage. But at this stage it’s unclear whether this will impact their existing coverage target.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has announced that an additional 5,000 homes in East Suffolk (England), covering an area in and around the town of Leiston, are due to gain access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network thanks to a new contract with the Sizewell C nuclear power development.

Over the year’s ISPreview has seen a few cases of wonky UK home broadband installations. The latest example comes courtesy of F&W Networks and supporting ISP Hey! Broadband, which post-install informed one of their customers that they “do not bury ducts, you will need to bury them yourself” (i.e. leaving fibre exposed across a front lawn).

Some 880 homes, businesses and schools in the Hertfordshire (England) town of Rickmansworth, which is home to a total population of over 25,000, have been left without a working fixed broadband ISP and phone service. The situation occurred after criminals damaged Openreach’s local network while attempting to steal their copper telecoms cable.

Consumer magazine Which? has today launched the “Right to Connect” campaign, which accuses UK mobile and broadband providers of “duping consumers with their sneaky mid-contract price hikes” and is instead calling on the regulator, Ofcom, to “ban this practice” and deliver generally “clearer and fairer pricing“.

Internet giant Amazon will today launch their first two prototype satellites – Kuipersat-1 and Kuipersat-2 – into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) as part of plans to test the technologies that will be used in Project Kuiper, which aims to loft a mega constellation of satellites to deliver ultrafast broadband and 4G/5G mobile across the world.

The boss of UK broadband ISP Quickline, which is building a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network to 96 rural locations (55,000 premises) across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England (deployment plan), has warned that isolated communities could “wither and die” if they are not connected to “reliable, high-speed broadband“.
