Mobile operator Vodafone has this morning echoed EE’s recent announcement (here) by confirming that they’ve successfully switched-off their 3G mobile (mobile broadband) network across the UK. The related radio frequencies will now be repurposed to strengthen faster 4G and 5G services, but there’s a small catch.

The CEO of broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), Lutz Schüler, has – perhaps predictably – raised competition concerns over the proposed mobile merger between Vodafone and Three UK, not least because he believes the pair will end up controlling too much radio spectrum. Network sharing is another issue.

Network operator EXA Infrastructure has today announced a new plan to deploy a high-capacity hybrid data transmission route between New York and London, which will use a mix of existing subsea fibre optic cables and a new Microwave wireless link to deliver ultra-low latency transatlantic connectivity.

Reputable internet provider iDNET, which has been around since 1996 and offers a variety of fibre broadband and Ethernet services to UK homes and businesses, has moved to boost their wider network resilience against “rogue JCB digging” by partnering with Zayo to install their own Dark Fibre Ring for 360Gbps of extra capacity.

Network builder and broadband ISP G.Network, which after a long pause recently resumed the deployment of their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in London (here), has today become the latest internet provider to announce that they will buy new customers out of their existing contracts.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today published a short progress update on their national work to switch-off the old 3G data (mobile broadband) network, which reveals that the last of 18,000 sites to be shut-down – in Belfast – was finally taken off the air last week.

Internet provider Cuckoo, which plans to become the UK retail outlet for Fern Trading‘s (Octopus Investments) consolidated full fibre networks (Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre, Giganet and AllPoints Fibre), has refreshed their FTTP broadband plans. But at present they’re only available via CityFibre, while Openreach seems to have been dropped.

Eastbourne-based network operator and ISP Lightning Fibre Ltd, which was busy deploying a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Sussex and Kent in England, fell into administration last week – only a few days after the company cancelled £39.3m worth of shares.

The first retail broadband ISPs have begun to give their reactions to Virgin Media’s recent change of strategy (here), which will see them open up their existing fixed line network to wholesale via a new business (NetCo). Most internet providers have welcomed the move, but some are sceptical of NetCo’s ability to match Openreach (BT).

O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today become the second major UK mobile operator, after Vodafone, to switch-on a commercial 5G Standalone (SA) network in the UK, which will deliver faster mobile broadband speeds (inc. latency) and more service flexibility. The service has initially gone live in parts of 14 cities and comes at “no extra” cost to customers.
