Mobile operator Three UK has confirmed that they too have joined EE (here) and Vodafone (here) in starting to rollout their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) service on the London Underground (tube trains), with Archway, Tufnell Park, and Notting Hill Gate stations this week becoming the first to be upgraded.

A short but interesting debate took place yesterday in the House of Lords (Parliament), which saw many cross-party peers call on the UK government – represented by Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay (DCMS) – to do more to help tackle the impact of recent above-inflation price hikes by broadband ISPs.

Ofcom has today opened an expected consultation into Openreach’s ‘Equinox 2‘ discount scheme, which will further reduce the wholesale prices of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband products for ISPs and thus consumers. But their “provisional” view is “not intervene“, which is likely to anger alternative networks (AltNets).

Mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that customers using the Notting Hill Gate station on the London Underground have started to receive their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) signal. The tunnels from Holland Park to Queensway (Central Line) and Archway to Kentish Town (Northern Line) will follow by the weekend.

Ofcom has today set out their “expectations” for how they want mobile operators – Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2 (VMO2 / Virgin Media) – to approach the phased switch-off of legacy 2G and 3G mobile services. The goal being to ensure consumers are “treated fairly” and aren’t left cut-off from vital services.

The BT Group has today published their latest Q3 FY23 results to December 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 9.57 million premises (up by 810k in the quarter vs 805k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G customer based to 8.5 million (up from 8.157m).

CityFibre has reportedly begun a new restructuring process that could result in the loss of up to 400 jobs out of their 2,000 strong workforce. The operator has blamed this on the UK’s “struggling” economy (i.e. causing rising costs for their business) and the desire to keep their rollout of full fibre gigabit broadband on track.

Broadband ISP, pay TV and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has this morning announced that they will create “around” a further 350 new apprenticeship roles across the United Kingdom in 2023, which is up from a commitment of 200 last year.

Alternative network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm has today announced that their multi-gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has now covered 100,000 premises across 29 locations. The figure is double the 50,000 they reported in July 2022 and ten times more than the 10,000 they had in December 2021.

Mobile operator EE has announced that they’ve upgraded their new 4G mobile network on the London Underground by enabling the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity, which will initially only be live across three stations – Archway and Tufnell Park (Northern line), as well as Notting Hill Gate (Central line).

Bath-based alternative network UK ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of South West England, has today reported that their network now covers 60,000 premises (up from 50k in Sept 2022) and has 13,000 customers (up from 11,500) – 21.67% take-up.

Vodafone UK has published their latest quarterly (Q3 FY23) results, which states that their fixed broadband ISP base saw strong growth to total 1.158 million customers (up by 47k in the quarter vs 39k in Q2 FY23), while their mobile base also grew again to total 17.802 million (up by 259k vs 321k in the previous quarter).
