Civil engineering firm Light Source, which works with a number of UK operators to deploy Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP infrastructure (e.g. Upp, Netomnia, Virgin Media, Airband and KCOM), appears to be experiencing problems after engineers reported being laid off and a manager said they had “entered administration“.

Mobile operator EE has announced that they’ve upgraded their new 4G mobile network on the London Underground by enabling the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity, which will initially only be live across three stations – Archway and Tufnell Park (Northern line), as well as Notting Hill Gate (Central line).

Bath-based alternative network UK ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of South West England, has today reported that their network now covers 60,000 premises (up from 50k in Sept 2022) and has 13,000 customers (up from 11,500) – 21.67% take-up.

Vodafone UK has published their latest quarterly (Q3 FY23) results, which states that their fixed broadband ISP base saw strong growth to total 1.158 million customers (up by 47k in the quarter vs 39k in Q2 FY23), while their mobile base also grew again to total 17.802 million (up by 259k vs 321k in the previous quarter).

Kent-based independent UK ISP Vfast (Orbital Net), which sells packages to consumers based on a mix of fixed wireless access (FWA) and full fibre (CityFibre and OFNL – in London and Medway) broadband networks, has today announced that they’ve signed-up their 15,000th internet access customer.

Rural UK broadband ISP Gigaclear has announced that their ongoing £38m investment to expand their UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network into Buckinghamshire (England), which has already covered around 19,000 premises, is being extended to reach 1,700 homes in the village of Great Missenden. But they’re not alone.

A new trial has been launched by telecoms giant BT (EE) and Stratospheric Platforms (SPL) – funded by Innovate UK, which aims to harness High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) aircraft, usually located above commercial air traffic in the Earth’s stratosphere, in order to extend 5G (mobile broadband) coverage into remote rural areas.

Vodafone will, in just a few days’ time, become one of the first UK mobile networks to start the process of switching off their old 3G mobile (mobile broadband) platform, with people in the Devon city of Plymouth and the Hampshire town of Basingstoke being among the first to switch.

After sitting on the fence for a while, Sky Broadband has finally re-adopted Ofcom’s voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which among other things will require them to give customers more information about their estimated line speed and makes it easier to exit a contract penalty free (if faults cannot be fixed).

Hull-based broadband ISP KCOM has announced that their rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England) has added the village of Gunness to its plan, which once completed will reach 360 additional homes and businesses.

A number of Virgin Media’s UK broadband ISP customers have been left frustrated after they were promised the provider’s latest Hub 5 router (Sagemcom F3896LG-VMB) with their package, but instead ended up being sent an inferior Hub 4 (Arris TG3492LG-VMB) and with no clear promise to rectify the issue at a later date.

The Mayor of London UK, Sadiq Khan, has today claimed that 50% of the capital city (up from 4% in 2017) can now access a full fibre broadband ISP network, which is apparently “thanks to the Mayor’s policies and his work with boroughs and broadband providers“. We’d say only a small part of it is down to that.
