Zzoomm Street Works FTTP

Broadband ISP Zzoomm has reported that take-up of their multi-gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in one of their first locations to go live during early 2020, the Oxfordshire (England) town of Henley-on-Thames, has now hit 1 in 3 premises (roughly 33%) and growing.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today refreshed some of their SIM Only “Pay As You Go” mobile plans (Big Bundles), which sees a number of their plans getting a data allowance (mobile broadband) boost for no extra cost. The £15 for 25GB “Rolling Plan” has also been boosted to 30GB, although the rest of their Rolling Plans are unchanged.

SpaceX’s global network of Starlink ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) have just moved a step closer to launching their new ‘Direct to Cell‘ product, which will harness that same network in order to deliver a 4G mobile service to unmodified Smartphones across the world (regulation and ground stations allowing).

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks (formerly BAI Comms) has announced that they’re working with the Greater London Authority (GLA), Virgin Media and Transport for London (TfL) to deploy a new “high-speed” full fibre network across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

The MP for Haltemprice and Howden, David Davis, has called on ISP KCOM, MS3, Connexin and other alternative broadband network operators in East Yorkshire (England) to help resolve the “unsightly mess of unnecessary street furniture” (a reference to recent protests against poles) by fairly sharing access to existing ducts and poles.

Infracapital-backed UK broadband ISP Ogi has this morning revealed that their new multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city of Cardiff (Wales) has finally started to go live. But for now the provider’s local deployment is largely focused upon catering for businesses (they focus on homes in other locations).

Mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which last week confirmed that it had been struck by a serious cyberattack that disrupted their systems and connectivity services across the UK (as well as in various other countries), has now confirmed that the hackers also “accessed at least some of the personal information held in our systems“.

Mobile network operator giffgaff has just become the latest provider to introduce eSIM (Electronic SIM) support, although at present they only appear to be allowing existing customers with the operator’s latest Smartphone app installed (iOS App and Android App) – version 12.13.0-v337 or above – to transition from a physical to electronic SIM.

Vodafone 4G and 5G OpenRAN Rural Mast

Mobile network operator Vodafone has announced a new collaboration with British semiconductor firm ARM, which is designed to help fast-track the development of new platforms (chipsets) for their future 4G and 5G based Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN).

Nokia’s Bell Labs research division has established two new world records in submarine optical communications. The first achieved a net data rate of 800Gbps (Gigabits per second) on a single optical wavelength at a distance of 7865km, while the second hit a net throughput of 41Tbps (Terabits) over 291 km via a C-band unrepeated transmission system.

Broadband provider FibreNest, which is the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) operator for Persimmon Homes‘ new build UK housing developments, appears to have introduced a new router for customers who are just joining the service. The new unit replaces their previous Linksys Velop system, although we’re unsure whether it’s an improvement.

Openreach (BT) has announced that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network now covers just over 1 million properties in Scotland, which is up from 949,000 in late August 2023 and 800,000 in mid-March 2023. The operator has also revealed the 20 locations with the best “ultrafast broadband coverage” on their network.

Nick Parbutt, the boss of network builder and UK gigabit broadband ISP toob, has revealed that the operator may have changed its strategy to focus more on growing customer take-up than on expanding their network coverage. But at this stage it’s unclear whether this will impact their existing coverage target.
