Commsworld-and-Alncom-FTTP-Rural-Countryside

Last year saw rural ISP Alncom enter into a new partnership with business provider Commsworld (here) to help support the rollout of their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Northumberland and Durham in England. The fruits of this agreement are now starting to show.

CityFibre has announced that they will invest £15m to rollout their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across “nearly every” home and business in the Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth. Construction work on the new full fibre network is planned to “begin this winter“.

Hessle-based network provider MS3, which is backed by infrastructure fund Asterion and is working to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the North of England (here), has added the three Lincolnshire towns of Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Cleethorpes to their build plan.

The BT Group has published their Q4 2021/22 results to March 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow by a record 752,000 premises in the quarter (up from +662K last quarter) to total 7.2 million. The operator also signed an FTTP co-provisioning deal with Sky Broadband.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has banned several adverts for Tesco Mobile – most of which were intended to highlight how big mobile operators were hiking their prices again – after 52 people complained that they contained offensive content (i.e. words that alluded to an expletive) and some could also be seen by children.

Ofcom has proposed to tweak their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which will extend the current ‘Right to Exit‘ (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a problem with broadband speeds) to the latest definition of service bundles. It will also require FTTP and cable ISPs to provide details on observed line speeds.

Mobile operator Three UK has today become the latest provider – after Vodafone and EE – to announce that it aims to completely switch off their legacy 3G (mobile broadband) network by the end of 2024. The move will free up resources to allow Three to focus on improving the 4G experience and rolling out 5G to more parts of the UK.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their combined results for Q1 2022, which confirms that their plan to upgrade existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network areas with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology has now begun. But their fixed line broadband base took a hit.

Three UK ZTE 5G Hub

Some customers on Three UK’s 5G based unlimited Home Broadband packages, specifically those who recently joined and received the latest ZTE MC801A based 5G Hub router (here), have been reporting problems with connectivity and significant falls in broadband speed. The issue appears to stem from a bugged firmware update.

Prince Charles has today carried out the State Opening of Parliament event – formally still referred to as the “Queen’s Speech“, which sets out the UK Government’s agenda for the coming session. The speech contained no real surprises, but it did include and reiterate some bills that will impact broadband infrastructure and internet safety.

Two investment groups – one including Neos Networks (bidding alongside Cellnex) and the other Virgin Media (bidding alongside Nokia and Jacobs) – have reportedly been approved to bid on the £1bn auction of 10,000 miles worth of Network Rail‘s trackside cable network. The winner could use this to improve gigabit broadband and 5G cover.

Hull-based ISP KCOM, which serves 250,000 premises across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England with their full fibre (FTTP) network, has today announced that they’re making it “easier and quicker” for struggling families to access its low-cost “Flex” social tariff by moving the application online and reducing the price.

EE (BT) today claims to have become the first mobile operator to have expanded its ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network to cover more than 50% of the UK’s population, which it added had been achieved “five years ahead of government’s ambition” – despite the challenge of needing to replace Huawei as a key supplier.

The Mobile UK trade body, which represents operators including Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone, has today published a new report that calls on the Government to put funding behind the establishment of Digital Champions at local authority level to help coordinate the mobile and broadband infrastructure rollout.
