A new survey of 2,000 UK adults has estimated that around 6.95 million households are now out of contract with their current home broadband ISP, which they claim means that all of those customers could be “overpaying” by an average of £162 when out-of-contract (collective total of around £1 billion).

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise in Scotland has announced the completion of a joint £7.7m state aid funded project to build a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to connect 154 public sector sites (schools, NHS, council etc.) across Inverness, Fort William, Thurso and Wick. But it’s also fostering FTTP.

The Welsh Government has provided a Q4 2021 progress update on their £52.5 million Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 25,855 premises (up from 24,515 in Q3) have now gained access to the operator’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

Hull-based UK ISP Pure Broadband, which currently delivers internet connectivity services to homes and businesses covered by the full fibre networks from KCOM, CityFibre and OFNL, has today added a fourth network provider in the shape of MS3. The Government has today confirmed their intention to introduce a series of changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure, which aims to help extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England via key changes (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres).

The rapid rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks across the UK – occurring via a mass of different networks (Summary) – is wonderful to see, but we would caution consumers not to bank their future choice of provider until AFTER such networks have been deployed and gone live.
