The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has called on the government to be “bold and brave” when they publish their new Planning and Infrastructure Bill (PIB) tomorrow, which it’s hoped may contain some measures that will benefit the roll-out of gigabit broadband and 4G / 5G mobile networks.

The UK Government’s Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, has today outlined a raft of new investments, reforms and appointments aimed at “supercharging innovation and helping to grow the economy“, which among other things includes an investment of £23m into “cutting edge telecoms research and deployment“.

Alternative broadband operators Zzoomm and FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes), both of which have been rolling out multi-gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP networks across different parts of the UK, have today confirmed the completion of their recently announced merger (here). The deal has received all the necessary regulatory approvals.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make part of the 1900MHz radio spectrum band (1900-1920MHz), which was previously awarded for mobile operators but has since gone unused, available for use by both the UK’s rail network (5G mobile / broadband services) and to extend coverage for the 4G Emergency Services Network (ESN).

England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for people in later life, Anchor, has today revealed that they’re working with Managed ISP Wifinity to deploy faster Wi-Fi infrastructure across its almost 1,700 housing locations and care homes – serving more than 65,000 residents in almost 55,000 homes.

Ofcom’s rules require that all “phone, broadband and pay-TV providers” must “warn customers when their current contract is ending, and what they could save by signing up to a new deal” (usually sent between 10-40 days before the end of your contract). But an ongoing legal challenge makes the situation for customers of Sky TV a bit more confusing.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT appears to have confirmed that their strategy of turning EE into the group’s “flagship brand for our consumer customers”, which was eventually expected to result in the BT brand focusing more on business customers, will no longer result in the original brand being retired for consumer products.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has just unexpectedly announced that alternative network provider Freedom Fibre has “mutually agreed to terminate” the £43m (state aid) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for Cheshire (Lot 17), which would have expanded a full fibre (FTTP) network to 15,000 premises in hard to reach areas.

Alternative broadband operator and UK ISP Connect Fibre, which aimed to cover 100,000 premises across the East of England with their gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) network, has this morning announced the launch of Wi-Fi 7 capable routers “across all its contracted fibre broadband packages” and at “no additional cost“. But that’s not the only change.

As expected following last year’s merger agreement, broadband ISP Lit Fibre has today announced that customers of their service now have access to take packages over CityFibre’s national full fibre (FTTP) network too, which is currently available to over 4.3 million UK premises (4.1m RFS).

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative gigabit broadband operators, has today called on the UK government to ensure that their future Industrial Strategy “prioritises digital infrastructure“. The group wants this to be supported by a national campaign to promote full fibre-adoption, among other things.

The public policy team from broadband and mobile operator Vodafone (UK) has, once again, started a debate over the future of Net Neutrality rules (i.e. protecting the open internet from abuse by network operators) and warned that “telecoms networks are not infinite … [and] … overconsumption of this valuable and finite resource is already putting them at risk of degradation and depletion“.

Last month we reported that broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) were gearing up to start making their new XGS-PON powered full fibre (FTTP) network upgrade available to homes in existing coax (cable) areas (here), which was expected to occur in March 2025. Since then we’ve observed a growing number of areas where the service and symmetric speeds of 2Gbps are now becoming available, albeit with a catch.

Network data from broadband ISP Virgin Media has revealed that Tuesday is the UK’s new “big night in“, with evening peak (between 8-10pm) internet traffic pushing higher than on any other day of the week – usually driven by online video gaming (mostly big update/patch downloads) and TV sports events (streaming).
