Engineers working for Openreach (BT) have started to extend the operator’s new 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to the beautifully remote Inner Hebrides island of Iona, which is sometimes described as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland and sits just off the Ross of Mull on the country’s western coast.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed the top ten locations for coverage of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Kent (England), which sees the coastal town of Minster on the Isle of Sheppey top the table with “almost” 90% of all residents able to upgrade.

In somewhat of a unique development for the UK and Wales. Transport for Wales (TfW), which is a not-for-profit owned by the Welsh Government, has launched a new “arm’s-length initiative” called TfW Ffeibr (Fibre). This has built a new full fibre broadband network alongside the railways and is offering access to help serve communities in the South Wales valley.

Business UK broadband ISP Commsworld has today announced that they’ve completed the construction of the core network build for a new full fibre infrastructure in Northumberland (England), which is designed to replace the county council’s ageing Wide Area Network (WAN). But local homes, schools and business are also seeing the benefit.

New research from Broadband Genie has analysed 207,711 internet speed tests in order to identify the top slowest and fastest ten UK streets for broadband. The slowest street was found to be Greenfields Road in Bishop Auckland (average downloads of 0.35Mbps), while the fastest was Tynemouth Street in London (921.76Mbps). But this isn’t the full story.

The industry-led One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo), which operates the central messaging platform that helps UK ISPs to implement Ofcom’s new One Touch Switching (OTS) process, has today announced that they’ve completed 200,000 switches of broadband and phone services since going live on 12th Sept 2024 (up by 20,000 this week).

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has revealed that they’re moving ahead with plans to consult on specific proposals that would authorise Direct to Device (D2D) satellite services to work in UK mobile bands (inc. MSS – Mobile-Satellite Services), which could be used to help improve mobile (4G and 5G) coverage. The proposals are planned to surface during “early 2025“.

New research from network access provider Openreach (BT), which was pieced together by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) and Stantec, has claimed that the operator’s ongoing roll-out of a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network could contribute up to £66bn (GVA – Gross Value Added) to the UK economy in 2029.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has begun to inform their UK customers, specifically those with inclusive roaming, that their “current roaming products will be removed” from 25th December 2024. The plan is to replace them with new roaming plans, due for launch on 4th Dec 2024, but this has left some existing customers confused about the impact.

The High Court in London has dismissed an appeal by investment firm LetterOne, which had been asking the court to rule that it was unlawfully ordered, under the new National Security and Investment Act (NSIA), to sell Upp’s full fibre broadband network by the UK Government. The company is now considering whether or not to challenge the outcome.
