Low-cost internet provider Plusnet, which is part of the wider BT Group, has got itself into a bit of hot water with a small collection of their old legacy email users after leaving them unable to access their inboxes for several weeks. But despite the passage of time, the provider still won’t say what has caused the problem or when it will be fixed.

The latest Q3 2024 Global Call Threat Report from Hiya, which also works with broadband ISPs and mobile operators (BT, EE, O2, Virgin Media etc.) to help detect and block SPAM and fraud calls, has revealed that residents of the UK receive 4 spam calls per person each month (up from 3 spam calls last quarter) – albeit one of the lowest rates in Europe.

Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today announced that the recent introduction (here) of their new “next generation” Converged Interconnect Network (CIN) has already helped to improve its mobile network across the UK, not least by connecting 1,000 mobile sites to its proprietary 10Gbps fibre optic backhaul network.

Ofcom has published their annual Connection Nations 2024 digital infrastructure report, which among many other things finds that residential gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks now cover 84% of the UK (up from 78% in 2023), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 90-95% of premises (up from 85-93%). But rural cover remains poor.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has surveyed UK mobile coverage (4G, 5G etc.) and mobile broadband speeds along the East Coast Mainline – as operated by the London North Eastern Railway (LNER), which found that passengers can face “hours without mobile coverage access” while travelling between London and Edinburgh. But EE delivered the best service.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today finally granted approval for mobile operators Vodafone and Three UK to proceed with their merger deal (here), which will result in an expansion of their 5G Standalone (SA) network (broadband) coverage. But the merged company will have to comply with new legal obligations and consumer pricing controls.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has confirmed that a ransomware gang made an “attempt” to compromise their BT Conferencing business platform. The group, which calls itself Black Basta, claims to have stolen 500GB (GigaBytes) of sensitive and financial data, although the UK operator has yet to confirm this.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has revealed the outcome of the Telecoms Adjudicator‘s (OTA) recent review into the remaining problems (i.e. the matching process) with the new One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which was intended to make it easier for consumers to change broadband ISPs but is still somewhat of a work-in-progress.

Customers of mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) in the city of Bristol are starting to benefit from the deployment of a new 4G based small cell mobile (mobile broadband) network, which reflects a recent partnership with Cellnex UK and the Bristol City Council (BCC) in England.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that the introduction, in April 2024, of a new website app (‘Change My Appointment‘) that put customers in charge of their engineer visits, has already helped to reduce missed appointments by 30%. The extra resources freed up by this have also boosted the number of engineers installing full fibre broadband services.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has boosted 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across the Central and Northern parts of the remote rural Isle of Skye in Scotland. The operator used a helicopter to bring in a new mast, which has been strategically located among trees to minimise its visual impact on the natural surroundings.
