Mobile operator Vodafone has today confirmed their commitment to both “exceeding” the UK Government’s minimum Shared Rural Network (SRN) coverage target for 4G services in Northern Ireland and upgrading this to support 5G Standalone (5G SA / mobile broadband) technology. But only if they get approval for their merger with Three UK (here).

Sky’s sibling NOW Broadband (NOW TV) sub-brand has notified existing internet and phone customers of an imminent price increase, which will be introduced from 5th July 2024 and bump their package prices by an extra £3 per month (£36 per year). This is only slightly lower than last year’s £3.50 hike.

Fibre optic network builder CityFibre has issued a brief progress update on their efforts to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the Bedfordshire (England) town of Luton, which began two years ago (here) and has now covered a total of 35,000 premises.

Network operator MS3, which is deploying a new 10Gbps capable open access (wholesale) full fibre (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network across 30 locations in the UK (mostly East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire), has announced that they’ve now extended their coverage to 200,000 premises (up from 174,261 on 4th Jan 2024).

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is responsible for overseeing UK government expenditures to ensure they are effective, has warned that the current build pace of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile (broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025) “may not be sustainable“.

Mobile operator Vodafone has revealed that, as part of their commitment to the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, they’ve now expanded 4G (mobile broadband) services to a total of 250 extra rural sites across England, Scotland, Wales, and N.Ireland (up from 200 in April 2024). A mast located in Church Stretton (Shropshire) was the 250th to go live.

Belfast-based UK network builder and broadband ISP Fibrus has just extended their multi-gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into the coastal town of Millisle in County Down (Northern Ireland), which is home to around 2,300 people. The new service is currently said to be serving 1,268 premises.

A ruling by the Employment Tribunal has found that Rochdale-based UK broadband ISP Zen Internet acted “unfairly” when they dismissed former CEO, Paul Stobart, in March 2023. The move was followed by Zen’s original CEO and Founder, Richard Tang, being re-appointed as CEO after stepping aside in 2018.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced a HUGE update, which reveals the next batch of 517 new locations – covering 2.7 million UK premises – to benefit from their roll-out of a 1.8Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The operator has already covered 14m premises, and this update largely completes their build plan to 2026.

Broadband network builder nexfibre, which shares some of the same parentage as retail UK ISP partner Virgin Media (VMO2), has been hit with fines and charges totalling £11.3k in Somerset and £30k in Devon (England) after the local courts found them guilty of various roadworks offences that “posed a danger to pedestrians“.

Network operator nexfibre has just expanded their 2Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network, alongside partner UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2), to cover an additional 24,000 premises in the Merseyside (England) borough of Wirral.

The UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today awarded the £43 million (state aid) regional contract for Cheshire (Lot 17) in England to alternative network provider Freedom Fibre. The deal aims to extend their gigabit capable full fibre (FTTP) network to 15,000 additional premises in hard to reach rural areas.
