Mobile provider Tesco Mobile (Tesco plc) has today announced that they’ve renewed their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partnership with O2 (Virgin Media) to run for another 10 years, which marks a significant commitment given that MVNO deals usually attract 5-year terms.

Some 342 people in the Lancashire (England) town of Burnley have submitted a petition that calls on the local council to take to halt UK ISP Brsk‘s use of poles in their roll-out of a new full fibre (FTTP) network, which some residents claim has caused them to suffer “panic attacks“.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network has now been deployed to cover 50% of properties in Wales. The coverage equates to a total of 816,000 premises (up from 700k in July 2023) and reflects an investment of £240m+ (up from £210m).

The Local London organisation, which is one of four sub-regional partnerships in the UK’s capital city, has today published a new Digital Infrastructure Strategy, which among other things aims to tackle over 150,000 premises in south and east London that “do not have access to high speed – Gigabit capable – internet connections“.

Sky UK (Sky TV, Sky Broadband, Sky Mobile etc.), which is part of Comcast, has today notified staff that as many as 1,000 jobs could be cut this year as the company increasingly shifts its focus toward their internet-based (IP) TV solutions – Sky Glass and Sky Stream. Satellite TV installers are known to be one of the impacted groups.

CityFibre has announced that they’ve completed their “primary build” of a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the Suffolk (England) town of Bury St Edmunds. The network is now Ready for Service for over 16,000 homes, which is said to reflect about 81% of homes and most businesses in the town.

Openreach (BT) has launched a new special offer for broadband ISPs that discounts the charge on 10Gbps Cablelinks for FTTP and FTTX/C lines (GEA), nationwide, when taken on Layer 2 Switches (L2S) built before 31st December 2023 to just £499 +vat (the regular connection cost is normally £1,270.58).

Network access provider Openreach has announced that they’ve started their rollout of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the town of Dover (Kent). Separately, they’ve also issued a progress update on their £4.5m project to deploy the same network on the Isle of Wight (just off the south coast of Hampshire).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has proposed to grant an Earth Station Network Licence (ESNL) to NSLComm in support of its plans to launch a new global constellation of 264 satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which could be used to provide broadband to mobile sites (backhaul), as well as military, aviation, maritime and enterprises.

Mobile network analyst firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has published their latest biannual H2 2023 benchmark study of UK mobile networks (4G and 5G) and mobile broadband performance, which once again sees EE (BT) come top against rivals at Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2). But the picture for 5G performance isn’t so clear-cut.

Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT have today confirmed that they will recruit another 500 apprentices and graduates in 2024 (up from 400 in 2023) – forming part of their September 2024 intake. The roles will span across areas such as engineering (5G, FTTP etc.), customer service, applied research, data analytics and cyber-security.

A tricky conflict over eligibility for gigabit broadband vouchers and state aid subsidised contracts via the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme, which is overseen by the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) agency, appears to be disrupting the roll-out of full fibre (FTTP) networks in some rural parts of the country.
