Fibre optic speeds of the future visualised for MJ by CoPilot on 28062024

A new world data speed record has just been set after a team of Japanese researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), using a standard commercially available optical fibre, managed to reach a transmission rate of 402.2Tbps (Terabits per second) over a distance of 50km.

Oxfordshire-based alternative broadband ISP Zzoomm, which recently revealed that their 2Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network had covered 200,000 premises (RFS) across 23 towns in England (here), has today reported their end of year results (Dec 2023) and confirmed that they’ll cease new building work from the end of this month.

The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in England has put out a general warning to residents after observing a rise in “broadband-related cyber fraud“, which occurs when scammers attempt to impersonate your ISP in order to steal financial data and money. Some 68% of the reported victims have collectively lost £12.57k to this scam alone.

Nearly three years have passed since CityFibre first started rolling out their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Cathedral City of Chichester in South East England (West Sussex). Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a second 1.6Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package on Openreach’s network, which is called the ‘Broadband Made for Gamers‘ bundle and claims to offer online gamers “lower latency, game server geofencing and in-home network prioritisation,” among other things.

Private equity firm CVC (Fund IX) has this morning confirmed that they’ve acquired UK civil engineering firm M Group Services from PAI Partners. As well as catering for the water, energy and transport sectors, M Group also has a broadband and mobile focused telecoms division via several familiar brands (Avonline Networks, magdalene, Morrison and waldon).

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Neos Networks have revealed that their ongoing £7.25m “GigaHubs” project has now connected 180 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.) to a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network. But the work won’t complete until they reach the contracted 193 sites, later this year.
