Data centre provider Proximity Data Centres has today announced the launch of the “first regional internet exchange in the heart of the West Midlands” of England – IX Birmingham, which could increase network resilience, reduce latency and long distance IP traffic for those local networks, CDNs and broadband ISPs that harness it.

The Government will today introduce their new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill (DMCCB), which among other things also promises several new protection measures that could benefit customers of broadband ISPs and mobile operators (e.g. clearer contract information and making it easier to exit a contract).

Bath-based broadband ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of South West England, has today revealed that they’ve covered 70,000 premises and just connected their 150th community organisation – for free – as part of their ongoing rollout.

The Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) in England appears to be making progress on their plans to introduce a series of new digital and broadband grant schemes across the county, which will aim to help connect those who live in areas that currently lack access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connectivity.

The Scottish Government (SG) and NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) have today awarded BT (EE) with a contract worth up to £350m over the next 6-years, which will see the UK telecoms giant become the sole provider to deliver public sector connectivity across Scotland via the Scottish Wide Area Network (SWAN).

Internet service provider iTalk has recently become the latest broadband ISP to raise prices across their range of ADSL, FTTC and FTTP based internet and phone packages for consumers, which are all powered via Openreach’s national network. The change applies to their standard monthly prices and doesn’t impact existing first-term discounts.

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have been one of the worst affected yesterday after many of their customers (including yours truly) did NOT receive a notification during the Government’s nationwide test of their new Emergency Alerts service, despite using supported kit. A smaller portion of users on Vodafone, O2 and EE also had problems.

Ofcom has today published their latest UK consumer affordability report, which finds the take-up of cheaper social broadband ISP and mobile tariffs for those on state benefits has increased to 220,000 households (up from 136,000 six months ago). But that still represents just 5.1% of households on Universal Credit (4.3 million).

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has, after analysing and blocking tens of millions of malicious and fraudulent text (SMS) messages targeting its UK customers, revealed the top five most common fraud texts blocked on their network (firewall) in March 2023. Topping the table were texts from criminals posing as someone’s mum or dad.

Good news. Openreach has quietly re-opened their Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged communities (e.g. rural villages) around England, Wales and Scotland to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks.

The 2023 Northern Tech Awards has ranked broadband ISP and network builder Connexin as the 16th (out of 100) Fastest Growing Technology Company in the North. The provider is currently building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (here) across parts of Hull and Yorkshire in England.

Mobile operator Superdrug Mobile, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) on Three UK’s national network, has just confirmed a continued price freeze across all of its plans. The operator says they’ve not raised their costs in over 4 years and are opting again to buck the current trend, which has seen some rivals hike prices by up to 17.3%.

UK ISP Glide Group, which is busy extending their full fibre broadband network (leased lines and FTTP etc.), has announced that they’re upgrading more of their “legacy network” kit in BT exchanges across the country to “improve hardware, reduce electricity consumption and enable their network to support [10-100Gbps speeds]“.

The Director of Fixed Infrastructure, Engineering and Delivery at broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2), Matt Tully, has revealed that their upgrade from legacy Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) infrastructure to 10Gbps capable XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines will start to go live for homes “later this year“.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media (VM O2) have reportedly started the process that could lead to them selling off all or part of their stake in the UK’s largest mobile tower network, which could fetch around £750m (half its stake). The funding would then be used to help fuel their full fibre (XGS-PON) and 5G mobile rollout.
