Broadband and mobile provider EE (BT) has announced that, over the past year, they’ve “built or upgraded” over 500 4G (mobile broadband) sites across the UK as part of their commitment under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which is also supported by O2, Vodafone and Three UK.

Ofcom has published their Connection Nations 2022 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP networks cover 70% of the UK (21 million premises), which is up from 47%  last year, and outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 67-77% of premises (up from 42-57%).

We reported yesterday that Openreach (BT) had announced a range of price cuts for their full fibre broadband lines (here), but as part of the push toward FTTP the operator also hiked prices for copper-line broadband and phone services too (FTTC / SOGEA and G.fast etc.). Such changes will be particularly painful for those with no alternative.

Earlier this month we reported (here) that UK business broadband and I.T solutions provider Inclarity Communications had fallen into administration. The good news is that the company’s administrators, Moorfields Advisory Limited, have sold the company to VanillaIP owners DRD Communications.

The Powys County Council in Wales has announced that their Digital Powys project, which is supported by the UK and Welsh government’s gigabit voucher schemes, will soon result in three community broadband schemes (Llanfan Fawr & Llanwrthwl, Aberedw & Glascwm, and Dwyriw & Manafon) deploying a new full fibre network.

Customers who take UK ISP Sky Broadband’s cheaper “Basics” social tariff for home broadband and phone connectivity will now also gain the ability to add Sky’s new mobile social tariff, which will provide existing users with unlimited UK calls and texts and 3GB of data per month for 12 months “at no cost at all“.

Openreach (BT) has today responded to pressure from their ISP customers by unveiling a new round of major discounts (aka – “Equinox 2“) to the wholesale price of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products, which aims to keep the operator competitive and reduce prices on consumer packages.

Shetland Telecom, which is the arms-length network operator that was originally set up by the Shetland Islands Council (Scotland) to develop local fibre optic infrastructure, is facing a review by the local authority after councillors found that the company lacked a clear strategy and could potentially do more to improve broadband.

The Cheshire East Council in England has announced that UK ISP Airband has so far covered 3,000 extra premises with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which forms part of a £4.5m state aid supported contract that was signed back in January 2021 (here) under the Digital Cheshire programme.
