EE and BT TV Customers to Lose AMC Channel Next Month

Customers of UK broadband ISP BT and EE, specifically those taking their pay TV platform, may be unhappy to learn that the provider will be removing the premium AMC channel, and all catch up content, from all BT TV platforms from 28th September 2023 next month.

The TV and video-on-demand channel itself is best known for helping to create and broadcast some of the most popular American TV shows, such as Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and many more. Suffice to say that some customers will undoubtably be displeased with the news.

According to customers on BT’s Community Forum, the broadband provider appeared to stop marketing the AMC channel on related TV packages earlier this month. But the situation took a turn this week after BT began sending out emailed notifications to customers about the channel’s planned removal.

The speculation is that AMC may be doing this as part of a plan, which they’ve yet to announce, to launch their AMC+ streaming platform in the UK. But the last thing the streaming market needs right now is yet more over-priced content fragmentation via yet another app platform that has to be installed.

In the meantime, it’s worth noting that you can still find some of AMC’s content split up on other platforms, such as Disney+ and Amazon (Prime) etc. At least, you can for now..

I’m sure the same thing happened a few years ago.

I remember leaving Sky, joining BT then them losing AMC and having to let people leave their contract if they didn’t accept the change.

I went back to Sky on a super cheap deal.

You used to be able to get AMC, if you had “BT Sports on Sky” on SkyQ, but that was pulled, literally, Fear the Walking Dead was the only thing I watched.
There is no UK broadcaster for the Final Season of Fear, nor Dead City, or the upcoming Daryl Dixon show (and eventually the Rick/michonne show), so does appear to be the AMC streaming service is on the cards…

Piracy is the answer like I am doing now since 2008 when I was 18

Couldn’t careless about breaking the copyright law.Better than paying overpriced subscription services like Netflix,Amazon prime rubbish.

Makes you wonder how much life the established model for pay TV using proprietary equipment (e.g. Sky Q) has left in it. It seems that software based streaming players (either built into smart TV’s or on devices like Amazon Fire Sticks) are really the way forward. This is how I get I get Sky Sports through the Now TV platform for example.

The first few episodes of the eighth series of FTWD are currently available on Amazon prime, but you have to pay to watch them. I got sick of that American gun-fest after three series.

The likes of Sky Stream has already sort of replaced Sky Q for those that want that platform. Though as for how much longer it will be around is an unknown. I’d like to think most people stream all the TV they watch nowadays.

That’s why piracy is the best.

    1. Avatar photo GDS says:

      Facepalm @ben.
If everyone pirates, then there is no revenue to create the content.

Its basically the Muddy Fox Syndrome…
everyone wanted a Muddy Fox Mountian bike in the 90’s, but EVERYONE got stolen, and so nobody bought them anymore, and that led to the company going bust….

Great news if I can get out of BT contract.
god knows how much they will put prices up in the spring. Ofcom need to ban mid contract price hikes.got rid of EE when they put prices up pay as you go for me from now on. Switch anytime I like. Will be getting 5g router with PAYG sim

I very much doubt they’ll let you out of a contract for that. I’m sure there will be something in the T&Cs saying they can change channel content.

To an extent, the ongoing value proposition of public service broadcasters e.g. BBC, ITV, Chan would be to license culturally relevant content (maybe with a legal right and duty to do so) and make it available widely in the UK. Public service broadcasters as curators and aggregators of content (by investment/cofunding creation or by licensing for periods of time, maybe with some sort of public vote process, as a mutual/CIC opt in, a bit like CoOp, rather than current charter process)

This would also stem the likely haemorrhaging of TV license fee (while this remains) as people realise that they can watch their choice of TV on streaming services that do not require a TV license (paid for e.g. Prime, Disney+ etc) or free (Pluto, Roku Channel, freevee and others).
