Project Gigabit Autumn UK Contract Map 2022

The Building Digital UK team has published their latest quarterly Winter 2022 update for the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which summarises some good progress, but also reveals that procurements for Lancashire, Surrey and Oxfordshire and West Berkshire have had to be deferred.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative broadband ISP networks, has warned that Ofcom could be putting their collective investment of £20bn to build competitive full fibre networks at risk if they wave through Openreach’s (BT) next round of FTTP broadband prices cuts (Equinox 2).

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today confirmed that they’re tripling the value of the vouchers they issue to homes under their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which helps those in rural areas to get a gigabit-capable internet connection installed. Businesses will also see a smaller boost.

The fourth and so far, largest, contract under the Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth £108 million – has today been awarded to UK ISP Fibrus, which will upgrade broadband for more than 60,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across Cumbria (England).

The UK Government has today launched a series of new trials that aims to leverage the new generation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in order to deliver faster and more capable broadband connectivity to some of the remotest locations, which full fibre (FTTP) would otherwise struggle to reach.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) is stepping up their preparations for another harsh winter, which last year saw multiple street cabinets and 750 “telephone poles” damaged in storms (example). Such damage can cause significant disruption to broadband and phone services, but the operator aims to do better this year.

The UK-based communication solutions provider World Mobile appears to have successfully piloted one of the first Starlink (SpaceX) powered distributed WiFi networks in the UK, which is being used to share low latency broadband speeds of up to 400Mbps across a remote caravan site in Wales.

A number of our readers have noticed that UK ISP Sky Broadband has, in the past week, removed their top 900Mbps (90Mbps upload) “Gigafast” package from sale to new customers, which was being sold over Openreach’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. Capacity issues could be the cause.

Openreach, supported by funding from the Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS), has completed the rollout of their gigabit-capable full fibre network to cover the tiny rural Dumfriesshire village of Mouswald – reflecting just 57 properties. It is the first and, surprisingly, “largest” of 7 community builds being delivered via a similar approach this year.
