Some 360 homes on the Dryden Estate in Southey Green, which is known as being one of Sheffield’s (South Yorkshire) most disadvantaged areas, are now starting to be connected to a “free” full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in order to test a new approach to tackling digital poverty.

The Consumer Pricing Bill (CPB), which seeks to “prohibit the practice of offering preferential pricing to new customers compared to existing customers“, will today get its second reading in the House of Commons. The Private Members Bill (PMB) could, if passed, effectively prevent first term discounts on broadband ISP and mobile packages.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has unveiled the winners of their 24th annual 2022 internet industry and broadband awards, which among other things saw B4RN take home the award for “Best Rural ISP” (second year running), while Brsk was named as the best infrastructure provider with under 100,000 premises.

The UK Government’s new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI) is finally set to become law after passing through both houses of parliament this week. The new law will, among other things, make it easier for full fibre broadband and mobile operators to upgrade, share and deploy new infrastructure.

The ITU and United Nations (UN) Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development has recently issued their annual progress update on getting the world connected to affordable broadband ISP connectivity, which among other things finds that 2.7 billion people have yet to even access the internet.

Network builder and UK ISP Upp has today confirmed that they’ve started rolling out their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to premises (homes and business) across the Norfolk town of King’s Lynn. But we’ve also managed to pull the full rollout plan (so far) from their website.

Budget UK ISP Plusnet, which is part of the BT Group, appears to have now officially stopped taking on new SME (small and medium-sized) business customers. A message on their website confirms that the products are “no longer available” and instead directs new customers to take up packages directly with BT.

Cityfibre has today announced that their huge £270 million rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across Glasgow (Scotland) is being extended into the Clydebank area, which will be supported by a new civil engineering contractor – local company IMS Scotland.

Openreach (BT) has reportedly informed its suppliers that their need to curb costs and get more “bang for its buck” will impact the UK rollout of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which will “include an element of cancellation or suspension” of some work and have a “financial impact“.
