Network supplier Ericsson has today announced that they’re investing “tens of million pounds” (GBP) in order to establish a new research unit in the United Kingdom, which will be used to help test and develop the next (sixth) generation of 6G mobile and wireless broadband technologies.

Blackburn-based network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new fixed wireless broadband network for UK ISP 6G Internet (not related to 6G mobile technology), has been hit with a small fine in the Greater Manchester market town of Bury (specifically the suburb of Brandlesholme) after they built unauthorised digital infrastructure.

Data traffic flowing through the London Internet Exchange (LINX) has today hit another record level – peaking at 7.424Tbps (Terabits per second) at 3:10pm – on the back of England’s first FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 match against Iran, which saw the three lions walk away with a 6-2 win.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England has received a further £250,000 of funding in order to extend their Mobile Boost Scheme, which works to improve rural 4G mobile (mobile broadband and voice) availability by offering vouchers (up to £1,200) to help deploy indoor mobile signal boosters.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has reportedly rolled out a new update for their broadband-based Sky Stream and Sky Glass TV services, which means that customers of the service will now see even more adverts appearing both before on-demand shows start and mid-show during breaks.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve doubled the number of customers they’ve connected, via various different UK ISPs, to their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Northern Ireland from 100,000 to 200,000 in the space of a year.

Residents and businesses on EE’s mobile network in the area surrounding the tiny rural hamlet and civil parish of Leaveland in Kent (England) have complained after a fault with the operator’s local mast left them without a working 4G connection, as well as a poor signal in other areas (via other masts), for two weeks and counting.

Openreach (BT) has informed ISPreview that its Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged parts of England, Wales and Scotland to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, will become available again for new applicants “early” in 2023.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has today resolved a problem, which appears to have been occurring for almost two weeks, that caused some of their wholesale partners and related fibre (FTTC and FTTP) customers to suffer from performance problems (e.g. slower than expected speeds, poor latency and high packet loss).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) saw its “busiest day ever on record for data consumption” (for gaming) on 16th Nov 2022 – trigged by the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, which pushed downstream internet traffic to a peak of 21Tbps (21 Terabits per second) and a massive 138 petabytes (PB) of data downloaded.

The Full Fibre Northern Ireland (FFNI) Consortium, which is made up of 10 councils outside Belfast and the Business Services Organisation (BSO), has confirmed the completion of their project to rollout a new full fibre broadband network to connect 887 public sector sites. The network itself was built by UK ISP Fibrus.

The UK Government’s latest Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has today used his Autumn Statement 2022 to, among other things, allay fears that he might cut funding for major national gigabit broadband and mobile infrastructure projects by committing to ensure that such projects remain “funded as promised“.
