The Broadband Forum has revealed that BT, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom and others have given their support to help develop a new Open Broadband standard – WWC Reference Implementation for 5G-RG [Residential Gateways] (OB-5WWC), which aims to bring the full benefits of the 5G mobile ecosystem to fixed-line broadband.

Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband) has today secured a huge investment of £145m from Downing LLP to fuel their rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which aspires to cover 250,000 homes and businesses by 2025 – mostly across rural parts of Scotland and Wales.

Openreach (BT) has apologised after their UK engineers, who were busy building a new “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Clackmannanshire (Scotland), installed a 27ft tall telegraph pole in a private garden without permission, and while the owners were out visiting a dying family member.

Mobile operator Three UK has reported that last night’s 6-hour Facebook outage, which also impacted associated internet services from WhatsApp, Oculus and Instagram, caused a huge surge in SMS (text messages) and MMS (picture messages) traffic – more than the last three New Year’s Eves combined.

UK ISP BT and partner Toshiba have today announced that they intend to build the “world’s first” quantum-secured metro fibre optic network between commercial sites in London, which will adopt ultra-secure communications via the use of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) encryption.

Technology giant Apple recently released their iOS 15 software for iPad (15.5) and iPhones, which introduced a new feature called ‘iCloud Private Relay’ that “hides your IP address and browsing activity [when using Safari] so that no one – including Apple – can see [it].” Naturally, the UK Government and broadband ISPs have concerns.

UK ISP Zzoomm has today secured a significant £100m investment (debt facility) boost from an international banking consortium, which will help the operator toward their target of deploying a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to reach 1 million UK premises in 85 towns by the end of 2025.

Bristol-based UK ISP RunFibre have just signed a new fibre optic supply deal with Cherry & White to help support their rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of South Gloucestershire. On top of that they’ve agreed a new 3-year framework contract with supplier Altnets.

Full fibre UK ISP Hyperoptic has today agreed a blanket-wide wayleave agreement with the Hounslow Council in West London, which will enable their gigabit-capable broadband (FTTP/B) network to cover 4,300 of the council’s social housing residents, including 20 free connections to supply local community centres.

A weekend report has claimed that several UK ISPs, including Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone, are still in discussions to join Virgin Media’s (VMO2) long-awaited plans to launch a wholesale product, which could act as a direct competitor to Openreach’s (BT) national network.

Poole-based UK ISP Juice Broadband, which already offers a mix of “full fibre” (via Openreach) and fixed wireless services to local premises around South Dorset, has become the latest internet provider to join CityFibre’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. Juice has also just begun connecting their first customers in Bournemouth.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has updated the prices of their broadband packages (ADSL, FTTC and G.fast) and also dropped their previous promise for “no end-of-contract price rises.” In addition, Shell has adopted BT’s approach to annual price hikes, which will see prices rise each year by CPI (inflation) + up to 3%.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve started to deploy the newly released 700MHz spectrum band for use on their latest ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, albeit initially limited to areas where they perceive there to be a case of “customer need” for it.
