Forget about OneWeb, Amazon (Kuiper) and Starlink (SpaceX) for a minute. The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has just received an application from Telesat for an Earth Station Network Licence that will be used to support their future “Lightspeed” constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The move was revealed just as a ballot on national strike action over pay occurs.

The Government’s £2.53bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,440,086 extra premises since 2012 and the latest take-up data to March 2022 shows strong demand, with adoption in most of the original build areas now exceeding 80%.

Mobile operator giffgaff has today followed Tesco Mobile’s recent, if controversial, decision (here) to end free EU roaming for UK customers by announcing a huge 75% reduction in inclusive data roaming (mobile broadband) from 20 GigaBytes (GB) to just 5GB, as well as rates of 10p per MegaByte (MB) beyond that.
