A new survey of 8,000 UK people by Which? has revealed the top reasons why people switch broadband ISP. Unsurprisingly 25% of those who had switched did so because they found a better deal with a new provider but poor customer service (18%), price hikes (12%), slow speeds (9%) and connection problems (7%) are also triggers.

A new survey of 2,000 UK consumers, which was conducted by broadband ISP Zen Internet, has claimed that the top technical difficulties experienced at home were slow internet connections (42%), devices disconnecting from WiFi (25%), internet outages (23%), trouble setting up new devices (22%) and computer viruses (13%).

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre has today announced that their £30m plan to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to “nearly every home and business” in the town of Southend-on-Sea (Essex) – supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone – has finally begun the construction phase.

Ofcom has concluded their investigation into “inaccurate” billing at 4G mobile operator giffgaff – owned by O2 (Telefonica UK) – and has fined the company £1.4 million after it found that an error in their billing system led to around 2.6 million customers’ being overcharged up to almost £2.9m in total over a period of nearly 8 years.

The incumbent broadband ISP for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they will launch two new routers from mid-September 2019 – the Technicolor DGA2231 and ZyXEL XMG3927-B. Both look to be very capable devices and are aimed at users of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The UK High Court has dismissed Liberty‘s legal challenge against the Government’s bulk data retention policy in its 2016 Investigatory Powers Act (IPAct), which is a mass surveillance approach that also catches innocent peoples communications data (i.e. phone, mobile and internet activity). The group expects to appeal.

The latest Sustainability Report from cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has revealed that they’ve reduced their carbon footprint by 22% since 2014 (fuel and electricity use) and they’ve also committed to using only 100% renewable energy, which is being underlined by their decision to join the RE100 initiative.

The CEO of UK cable and TV operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global), Lutz Schüler, was warned a tiny rival start-up ISP called toob that it “will use everything to keep them out of our city,” which is a reference to how both plan to deploy 1Gbps speed broadband services across the port city of Southampton in Hampshire.

A new YouGov survey of 1,017 UK adults, which was commissioned by NewsGuard and conducted between 27th June to 2nd July 2019, has found that 51% of respondents would trust their broadband ISP or mobile network operator more if they pro-actively alerted users as to the quality of a news website being accessed.

The UK Government’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced a £3.6bn Towns Fund to support an initial 100 towns “so that they will get the improved transport and improved broadband connectivity that they need,” although yesterday’s speech to the Manchester Science and Industry Museum didn’t include any detail.

Some broadband ISPs have told ISPreview.co.uk that they’re allegedly being put into difficulty by payment delays under the Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which appears to stem from the fact that one of the third-party companies hired to audit related projects has gone into administration.

The state aid supported Connecting Cumbria project, which has so far made “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to around 93% of premises in the county (125,000 extra homes and businesses), is being extended to add a further 2,000+ premises via Openreach’s Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Customers of UK ISP Bigblu, specifically those who use broadband packages based off the Satellite network from Avanti (HYLAS), have been suddenly and unceremoniously disconnected from their internet connections after Avanti “suspended the supply of satellite broadband to us with no notice.”

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has confirmed earlier reports that it intends to return to the fixed line broadband market. The move could result in the provider either moving to build their own “full fibre” (FTTP) style network or partnering with another ISP (e.g. Virgin Media, Cityfibre).

Mobile operator Three UK has today confirmed that all new and existing customers will have access to 5G, when it launches in August 2019 (details), with no mobile broadband speed caps and at no extra cost on all contract, SIM only and PAYG mobile plans. A big offer given their tendency toward “unlimited” data plans.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has this morning announced that they will launch their own 5G based Sky Mobile plans during November 2019, which as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partner of O2 will of course be directly linked to their UK rollout plan (here) for the new ultrafast mobile network.
