The CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, has revealed that the on-going expansion of Starlink‘s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based broadband satellites will, by the end of this year, push customer download speeds up to around 300Mbps and bring network latency down to around 20ms (milliseconds). A cheaper budget package is also planned.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has joined forces with Skyports, Deloitte and NHS Scotland to conduct a new 3-month drone trial using 4G technology, which will see the small unmanned aircraft being used to transport essential medical supplies and samples between sites for the National Health Service (NHS).

A new study from mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics, which exclusively examined the latest network availability and mobile broadband speeds on 5G operators in the UK, has found the EE still “continues to lead the way” on both fronts. Meanwhile O2 seems to be lagging behind their rivals.

Customers on various Openreach based UK broadband ISPs (e.g Sky Broadband, BT, TalkTalk etc.) in parts of Glasgow (Scotland) have been left without internet and VoIP (digital phone) connectivity today after a “power incident” (fault) hit the Bridgeton exchange last night, which could take a while to fully resolve.

UK ISP TalkTalk has announced that it will create six-month work placements for more than 50 young people in the North West, which forms part of the Government’s (Department for Work and Pensions) wider Kickstart Scheme – this provides funding to help create new job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit.

The winners of the annual Uswitch.com Mobile Awards 2021 have today been unveiled, which among other categories saw smaller operators like giffgaff scooping “Network of the Year,” while Asda Mobile were hailed as the “Best Network for Customer Service” and Smarty took home the win for “Best Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) Network.”

Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of their annual (2021) study of mobile network (4G and 5G) performance (broadband speeds etc.) across 37 UK cities, which concludes that O2 is the “most reliable network” – performing best in 18 of 37 cities, towns, and motorways tested, followed by EE, Vodafone and Three UK.
