Existing customers with the mobile division of supermarket giant ASDA have been told to request a new SIM card by the 15th September 2021, or risk being unable to use the service. The move follows a decision last year (here) to swap their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) supplier from EE (BT) to Vodafone.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today announced that they were able to complete their roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Swandicote (Derbyshire) “much faster than would have otherwise been possible,” which was done by combining three engineering methods in one location.

The Government’s new £210m UK Gigabit Voucher scheme, which is due to launch on 8th April 2021 and will help to spread 1Gbps capable broadband into some of the most remote rural areas, is facing somewhat of a backlash from communities that may find some or all of their homes being excluded under the new eligibility criteria.

Broadband ISP Quickline (part of the Bigblu group) has started to rollout a new 100Mbps+ capable broadband network across 1,500 rural homes and businesses in North Lincolnshire (England), which follows last year’s award of a new £1.8m state aid supported contract by North Lincolnshire Council (NLC).

Full fibre UK broadband ISP Jurassic Fibre, which has an ambition to cover 350,000 premises across South West England with their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises network (here and here), has opened a new office space and warehouse in Honiton (Devon) – transforming an old 2.2 acre site on the Bramble Hill Industrial Estate.

Some 2,500 additional homes in the Cheshire town of Alsager have today become the latest to benefit from ISP Virgin Media’s ongoing UK expansion of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which can deliver average top download speeds of around 630Mbps (reaching 1Gbps+ in the near future).

UK ISP Virgin Media (Business) has announced that their £23.8m deployment of a new 2,700km long “full fibre” network in Greater Manchester, which was designed to connect 1,700 public sector sites, is now “substantially complete” and is estimated to have already delivered an £11.8m economic boost to the local economy.

As expected, Ofcom has today accepted last year’s proposal from BT, which saw the UK ISP voluntarily offer to continue the existing discount that they apply to consumers who take a landline-only phone service (i.e. cutting the monthly rental from £18.99 to £11.99 for lines without broadband attached).

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today launched an Open Market Review (OMR) for Phase 1b and 1a of their new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme, which is the process used to identify the commercial coverage plans for 1Gbps networks over the next 3 years (i.e. confirms where public money will be needed).

Netgem TV has announced that their broadband-based IPTV platform, which is offered by a number of UK ISPs, is to be complemented by the introduction of their latest product – a whole home WiFi (mesh) service called “SuperStream” that is being aimed at internet providers in the UK and Ireland.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve achieved their latest deployment target, which means that 4.5 million homes and business across the United Kingdom can now order a service over their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network (1.9 million premises were added in the last year alone).

Network builder and UK ISP Vorboss, which is part of the Fern Trading Group (they also own Jurassic Fibre and Swish Fibre), has this week opened its new Central London headquarters at Broadwalk House, Broadgate. The new HQ gives them 17,000 sq ft of office space and comes after the provider doubled their headcount in 2020.
