The Connecting Devon and Somerset team will be hoping that the third time is a charm after they awarded £80m worth of contracts for Phase 2 of their delayed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) rollout project, which sees 6 LOTS being split between three suppliers (Airband, Truespeed and Wessex Internet).

Openreach (BT) has given UK broadband ISPs that make use of their “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products a little Christmas gift by discounting the cost of their 10Gbps Cablelink services, which help to provide the capacity for such full fibre connections.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today reported that, on average, household internet usage on their network increased by 50% year-on-year in 2020 as the COVID-19 crisis “accelerated the importance of home connectivity” across all aspects of life (e.g. working from home, video conferencing, education etc.).

New documents from the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, have revealed that three existing and new internet providers – Exponential-e, Connexin and Fibre Me – all appear to be planning to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks in the near future.

A new project between the Angus Council, SmartRural and UK ISP Rapier Systems in Scotland looks set to help bring “high speed broadband” connectivity to some of the county’s remotest rural residences and businesses via a new gigabit-capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.

Broadband ISP Wildanet, which until recently had focused on deploying a wireless network across rural parts of Cornwall in South West England, has secured a major investment of £50m from the Gresham House British Strategic Investment Infrastructure Fund (BSIF) to help it deploy gigabit-capable full fibre.

The DCMS Select Committee of cross-party MPs has today published the results of their inquiry into the Government’s £5bn pledge to ensure that 85%+ of the UK can access a “gigabit-capable” broadband service by 2025 and the role of 5G mobile. Unsurprisingly, they found significant concerns with deliverability.

The Government has today published the draft procurement strategy for their new £5bn Gigabit Broadband Programme (F20), which is a consultation on their plan to ensure that gigabit-capable networks reach a “minimum” of 85% UK coverage by the end of 2025 (before getting “as close to 100% as possible” thereafter).

Network provider Full Fibre Limited, which last year started building a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in various “rural and semi-urban areas” (here), has secured a financing deal with Basalt Infrastructure Partners that will enable them to cover “at least” 500,000 UK premises by 2025.

NordVPN, which is a popular Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider, has announced that they’re upgrading more of their infrastructure to adopt 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable servers in order to boost speeds. London, Singapore, and a part of the US are planned to go live by the end of this year.

The General Manager of UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Alex Bloor, appears to have launched his own personal YouTube channel and one of the first videos to go up is an interesting one that shows how he solved his own broadband problems by installing a Microwave (wireless) link to the local data centre.

Given all the focus on fibre services, it’s sometimes easy to forget that a few of BT Wholesale‘s exchanges are still using 20CN technology and have yet to be upgraded to the 21st Century Network (21CN) powered Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) platform (this process started in 2004). As promised space company OneWeb, which is owned by a consortium of the UK Government and Indian conglomerate Bharti Global (here), has today successfully launched their next batch of 36 high-speed broadband capable Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites – built with support from Airbus – into orbit.

Ofcom has published the results of new research into the affordability of consumer fixed broadband and mobile internet services, which finds that 19% of UK households (19%) – c.4.7 million homes – struggle to afford their telecoms services. Some 6% have difficulties paying for their broadband, while 5% struggle with mobile bills.

The new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG), which is led by paid consumer magazine Which? and various others (FSB, CBI, Ofcom etc.), has today published their first report that identifies a number of areas where improvements could be made to boost the take-up of 1Gbps capable broadband services in the UK.

Openreach (BT), which plans to invest £12bn to extend their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to 20 million UK premises by the mid to late 2020s (2025 – 2030), has confirmed that they will create another 5,300 engineering jobs during 2021. Plus they’ll convert their entire fleet to EVs by 2030.

Digital security specialists at Trustwave (SpiderLabs) have once again found “numerous security vulnerabilities” in one of D-Link’s home broadband routers, specifically the DSL-2888A, which could allow a malicious WiFi or local network user to gain unauthorised access to the device.
