YouFibre’s FTTP Broadband Goes Live in Barrow and Houghton

UK ISP YouFibre has announced that the first customers can now connect to their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the two towns of Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria) and Houghton-le-Spring (Tyne and Wear), which has been built by network partner Netomnia.

ISP InTouch Systems Joins CityFibre’s UK Full Fibre Network

Norfolk-based broadband ISP InTouch Systems, which also runs two fixed wireless providers – ITSwisp and WiSpire, has today become the latest internet provider to hop on to CityFibre’s growing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) platform – starting with their networks in Lowestoft and Norwich.

Giffgaff UK Boost Mobile Data Allowances on Goodybag Plans

Mobile operator giffgaff has informed UK customers that they’re going to be boosting the data (mobile broadband) allowances across most of their 4G and ultrafast 5G based “golden goodybag” plans from 22nd October 2021, which will be applied to both new and existing customers at no extra cost.

Sky’s Broadband IP TV Service to Launch as Part of Built-In TV

More details are starting to leak our way as Sky UK (Sky Broadband) get closer to taking the wraps off their future TV via internet connection (instead of a satellite dish) service. We now understand that the Sky over IP (SoIP) service will launch as part of an integrated QLED TV product line (pictured), called Sky Glass.

Ofcom Finalise One Touch Switching for UK Broadband and Phone UPDATE

Ofcom has today decided to adopt the new ‘One Touch Switch‘ (OTS) process for customers of fixed line phone and broadband ISPs, which will make it easier for you to switch between providers on physically separate networks (e.g. Openreach’s full fibre to CityFibre or Virgin Media etc.). But you’ll have to wait until April 2023 to use it!

Competition Tribunal Push BT Landline Overcharging Case to Trial UPDATE2

The Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) has issued a preliminary ruling that rejects BT’s attempts to stop a new £600m class action claim against the UK broadband ISP and phone operator, which alleges that they overcharged c.2.3 million landline-only customers between 2015 and 2018.

FullFibre Ltd Sees Build Rate Near 15,000 Premises Per Month UPDATE

Network builder FullFibre Limited, which aims to deploy a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover “at least” 500,000 UK premises by 2025, has revealed that they’re getting close to achieving a build rate of 15,000 UK premises passed per month (nearly 50,000 total premises passed).

Labour Conference Backs Free Full Fibre Broadband for All UK Again

Delegates at the UK Labour Party’s annual conference have passed a key motion on public ownership, which technically commits the party to nationalise the “broadband-relevant parts of BT” (Openreach) and “deliver free full-fibre broadband to all by 2030.” It also adds a new “jobs guarantee” to protect workers. Easy to say, hard to do.

Troubled UK ISP Origin Broadband Move Customers to TalkTalk UPDATE

UK ISP Origin Broadband, which since August has been attempting to appoint an administrator to help tackle over £20m in losses (here), has today informed ISPreview.co.uk that all of their customer lines are being migrated on to TalkTalk’s platform (previously they used a mix of platforms), who are indirectly also Origin’s new owner.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk and the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will today launch a scheme that enables job hunters across the country to apply for a new voucher scheme, which when redeemed will enable them to get 6 months of free broadband via the internet provider’s “Fibre” 35Mbps (FTTC) package.

AJ Technology (Kloud9) Set to Expand UK FTTP Broadband Rollout UPDATE

A little known company called AJ Technology, which runs UK ISP Kloud9, has revealed that they intend to expand their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Greater Manchester and bring it to more homes and businesses across “predominantly rural and urban areas in Northern England.”

BT Appeals its UK Full Fibre Business Rates Relief Certificate

Telecoms giant BT has lodged an appeal against its business rates relief “certificate” from HMRC’s (UK Government) Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which credible industry sources have told ISPreview allegedly relates to the issue of how much tax (rates) they pay on their new fibre optic broadband lines.

Website Status Update – Small Addition to UK ISP Listings

Just a note to say that we’ve made a few small changes to our Broadband ISP Listings (Comparison) page. The individual detail pages for each ISP now display whether a provider offers ‘UK Support‘ (Yes, No, Partial or Unknown [?]). We’ve also marked ISPs that support Ofcom’s 2018 Speed Code (where relevant) and the Automatic Compensation scheme.
