After a difficult couple of years the BT Group has today announced that their Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gavin Patterson, will be stepping down later this year and the board has already commenced a search to identify his successor. A new boss is expected to be appointed during the second half of 2018.

Cable broadband and TV operator Virgin Media has this week begun sending out “confidential” invites to what appears to be their first official customer trial of the IPv6 internet addressing standard, which until now has only been tested internally by the company’s staff (plus the occasional unexpected subscriber).

The UK telecoms regulator has today published a new consultation document on their proposals for the crucial World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19), which amongst other things highlights the bands they’d like to see used for 5G and the possibility of adopting 6GHz for use in future WiFi networks.

Earlier this year BT splashed £295m per season to secure the rights to show 32 Premier League matches on BTSport UK for a further three years from the 2019/20 season (here). Today the broadband ISP and pay TV provider has added 20 additional matches to that total by spending another £90m (total cost of £975m).

Last month security researchers found that a sophisticated and “likely state-sponsored” malware, dubbed VPNFilter, had become widespread and was infecting business devices from Linksys, MikroTik, NETGEAR and TP-Link. Sadly the code is now also hitting kit from ASUS, D-Link, Huawei, Ubiquiti, UPVEL and ZTE.

California-based ASSIA claims to have developed a new and more accurate way to help ISPs measure their broadband speed, which uses cloud-based machine learning to “intelligently monitor and measure” both broadband and WiFi performance while assessing bottlenecks across five key points in the network.

The European Commission has approved a new Electronic Communications Code (ECC) that could boost investment in “full fibre” (FTTP/H) and 5G mobile. At the same time a new report from the European Court of Auditors confirms that their original target for “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) take-up will be missed.

The House of Lords was yesterday given the opportunity to debate the Government’s new 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for fixed line broadband (implemented from 2020). Perhaps unsurprisingly they trashed it, while also calling for a “more ambitious” minimum speed of 30Mbps.

Mobile operator EE has today announced that it will switch on the “UK’s first” live trial of their new prototype 5G based ultrafast wireless broadband network at 10 sites around London’s Tech City area during October 2018, including five small businesses and five homes. Gigabit speeds are predicted.

As promised the Aylesbury Vale District Council in Buckinghamshire, specifically their Audit Committee, has published the draft outcome of their inquiry into the controversial Aylesbury Vale Broadband (AVB) network that was sold to UK ISP Gigaclear after running into challenges with their rural FTTH rollout.

BT has announced that their “Adopt a Kiosk” programme, which was setup in 2008 as a way for communities to retain one of their iconic red phone boxes (instead of having it scrapped), has now seen 5,000 adopted kiosks across the UK and the latest has allegedly been turned into the “world’s smallest night club.”

Alternative network provider Call Flow Solutions has today taken the wraps off their new UK ISP brand, Trooli, which has spent the past few months gathering private investment and quietly rolling out a new Gigabit capable rural Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband network in Kent (England).

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre and the new UK ISP connectivity brand name of M12 Solutions – Giganet – have today announced a joint project to deploy a new Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network for businesses inside the south coast city of Portsmouth (Hampshire, England).

Network builder Cityfibre and UK ISP MLL Telecom have opened up their new 24km long Gigabit fibre optic broadband and Ethernet infrastructure to local businesses in the city of Stirling (Scotland). The network has been live since last year (here) but initially it was only open to public sector sites (Public Service Network).

A new “independent” DotEcon study, which was commissioned by BT, has predicted that last year’s agreement to invest an additional £150m of state aid into improving the availability of “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) across Northern Ireland could result in economic, social and environmental benefits worth £1.2bn.

A new study conducted by the Open Rights Group has claimed that around 37% of court ordered website blocks in the UK, which are often enforced by large broadband providers against copyright infringing websites (internet piracy), are done in error and being “improperly administrated by ISPs and rights holders.”
