Openreach (BT) has notified us that the full commercial launch of their new “stand-alone broadband” product for UK ISPs – Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) – has officially started, which they said “marks the beginning of the end” for the old analogue telephone network (known to most as the “landline” phone service).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today announced that they’ve awarded a series of new regional build contracts for their gigabit-capable broadband and TV network to 6 national partners (worth £500m per year). On top of that they’ve also brought more than 700 customer-facing engineers back in-house to improve customer service.

Hampshire-based broadband ISP Onestream, which launched in 2016 and sells a range of affordable ADSL2+ and FTTC based bundles to consumers, has appointed the former COO of Mobile Phones Direct, James Carr, to be its new CEO. The provider now aspires to become the country’s “largest independent ISP.”

Customers of Sky’s (Comcast / Sky Broadband) TV service will be pleased to know that the Pay TV and broadband ISP giant have officially agreed to a new multi-year deal, which will make Disney+ content available for purchase in the UK and Ireland on Sky Q (this will then be followed by NOW TV in the “coming months“).

Mobile operator O2 has today announced that it aims to become the UK’s “first net zero mobile network.” As part of that they’ve pledged to remove carbon emissions from their entire business and network by the end of 2025, whilst also working with supply chain partners (e.g. Smartphone makers) to cut emissions by 30%.

The UK Fibre Connectivity Forum (UKFCF) is today “calling on” the property sector (house builders etc.) to work with network builders, operators and broadband ISPs to help deliver on the Government’s “gigabit-capable” ambitions by 2025, not least by getting infrastructure to where it’s needed and driving efficiencies.

The organisation responsible for maintaining 20,000 miles of railway (train tracks etc.), Network Rail, has confirmed that one of their free WiFi hotspot provider’s – C3UK – has suffered a personal data breach that leaked the email addresses and travel details of about 10,000 people online.

Fixed wireless access ISP BorderLink, which covers part of the eastern Scottish Borders and North Northumberland region with their ultrafast broadband (100Mbps+) capable network, has secured a loan of £100,000 from Business Loans Scotland in order to help them grow three fold over the next 2 years.

The Leeds City Council in Yorkshire has today signed a new £20.3m partnership with BT (Openreach), which will see the latter build a new local “full fibre” network to connect hundreds of schools, NHS and other public sector sites across the city. A new fund will also be setup to support community broadband initiatives.

The latest independent modelling of “gigabit” (1000Mbps+ / 1Gbps+) capable broadband technologies and coverage has revealed that related ISP networks are now available to 14.32% of UK homes and businesses (4.3 million premises), which compares with 12.40% for “full fibre” (FTTP) networks (3.7m).

Cityfibre has provided ISPreview with an update on their on-going ‘Copper to fibre switchover‘ consultation, which considers the question of retiring Openreach’s (BT) old copper telephone lines in favour of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband, albeit from the perspective of an alternative network provider.

Cable and full fibre ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today announced that, effective from “early” March 2020, more than 1 million homes across Birmingham, Coventry and surrounding areas in the West Midlands (England) will gain access to their new 1104Mbps (52Mbps upload) – Gig1Fibre – broadband speed upgrade.

A team of researchers working out of the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh have developed a new type of Hybrid Flat Panel Antenna (FPA), which could deliver fast on-board WiFi internet connectivity for trains by harnessing a Satellite broadband connection instead of a mobile (4G / 5G) network for capacity.
