Openreach’s (BT) Director of Infrastructure Solutions, Matthew Kirkman, has revealed that they’re now rolling out 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks at a rate of 20,000 UK homes passed per week (3x quicker than last year) and 88% of the new build developments they work with are opting for it.

Mobile operators Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2 are to be officially told by the Government that they will be banned from deploying hardware and software from Chinese tech giant Huawei into the core of their future 5G based mobile broadband networks, although non-core 5G kit (antennas etc.) will be exempt.

Consumer magazine Which? has released some results from their latest 2019 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Vodafone as the worst overall provider. By comparison Three UK came top of the big four operators, although smaller virtual operators like giffgaff tended to fair the best.

Customers of cable ISP Virgin Media’s ultrafast broadband and TV service will soon be able to access Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service on their Ultra HD V6 set-top-box, which is thanks to a new agreement between the internet shopping giant and VM’s pan-European parent company Liberty Global.

A further 24 villages and hamlets in the Welsh counties of Clwyd, Dyfed, Gwent, Gwynedd and West Glamorga have now gained access to faster 4G based mobile phone and mobile broadband services after O2 expanded the reach of their network. The upgrades have all taken place since the start of 2019.

The UK Government has sent final terms to Age Verification Providers for the related BBFC certification scheme, which sets strict rules for how such providers must verify a user’s age before allowing them to access a porn site. Cable ISP Virgin Media has successfully nudged the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban Vodafone from using the term “Gigafast” to generally promote their slower Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband tiers, which offered average speeds that range from 100Mbps to 900Mbps (i.e. not only 1Gbps).
