Mobile operator Vodafone have announced that their Rural Open Sure Signal (Femtocell) technology has just been rolled out to two more rural villages in Wales, Bryneglwys and Moylegrove, which means they can finally access 3G based Mobile Broadband and voice services.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project has proposed a revised Code of Conduct for tackling ‘Use of Existing Infrastructure‘, which clarifies that any ISP who bids for a contract must provide information for all their relevant infrastructure (irrespective of whether it’s actually used) in the target area.

The enterprise division of SSE Telecoms has today announced that their fibre optic network has been expanded to a further 30 of BT’s UK exchanges, which is on top of their existing 13,700km long and 232 Point of Presence (PoP) strong UK-wide fibre network.

A new survey of over 9,000 aircraft passengers from 27 countries, which was conducted by GfK on behalf of Inmarsat, has revealed that 92% of respondents would like to access on-board Internet connectivity but only if it’s of a good quality (60% might not connect to a poor service).

A team of German scientists have successfully achieved a record data rate of 6Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a distance of 36.7 kilometres by harnessing part of the E band spectrum, which operates at a radio frequency of 71-76GHz (GigaHertz). The new development could be used to boost both terrestrial and Satellite broadband capacity links.

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has lost out on a bonus worth £290,000 due to a rise in customer complaints, but don’t feel too bad for him as his pay for 2015 still increased to £5.4m from £4.6m in 2014. Meanwhile Chairman Sir Mike Rake has agreed to stay on until “at least” September 2017.

Chelmsford-based wireless ISP FibreWiFi (Buzcom), which predominantly focuses upon delivering 30Mbps+ capable broadband coverage to significant swathes of Essex and parts of Suffolk in England, is now an approved supplier for the Government’s £60m Universal Broadband Voucher Scheme.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that their superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network is being extended to the remote island group of Orkney off the north-eastern coast of Scotland, with homes and businesses in Kirkwall (largest town of 9,000+ people) being among the first to benefit.

Ubiquiti Networks has confirmed that some of their kit, which is used by wireless ISPs around the world (e.g. Vispa in the UK), is being attacked by a nasty piece of self-replicating malware that infects their Linux-based AirOS firmware (used on their routers, access points and other kit).

The Office for National Statistics has released its Internet Access report for Q1 2016, which reveals that just over one in ten adults (10.2% or 5.3 million) had NEVER used the Internet and that’s an improvement from 11.4% in 2015 or 13% in 2013. But issues of disability and age remain key barriers.

London-based ISP NextGenAccess has hinted at plans to expand its fibre optic based broadband network into more areas that are currently outside the coverage of the BT’s UK FTTC/P roll-out, with a particular reference being made to “rural areas and non-city centre data centres and technology hubs.”
