On 1st April 2019 the Scottish Government will go one big step further than the UK Government in Westminster by introducing 100% relief from business rates on new “fibre broadband infrastructure“. Better yet, the tax break is set to last for 10 long years until 31st March 2029.

The imaginatively named Exeter-based business ISP Full Fibre Limited, which currently claims to operate a core network between its two data-centres in London and fibre broadband access networks in Devon and Surrey, has revealed that they have tentative plans to expand their fibre network.

Mobile operator Three UK has launched a new Mobile Broadband plan that bundles “unlimited data” with the very latest Huawei AICubeB900 router for just £25 per month, which adds Amazon’s Alexa (Echo) AI smart speaker technology alongside the functions of a mobile WiFi router that can handle 64 simultaneous users.

RootMetrics (IHS Markit) has today published the results from their H2 2018 study into 4G and 3G mobile network performance across 16 of the United Kingdom’s “most populated metropolitan markets” (cities), which found that Coventry and Leicester were the best. Sadly London and Birmingham were the worst.

The CEO of Sky UK (Sky Broadband), Stephen van Rooyen, has written a letter to the heads of several alternative “full fibre” (FTTP) network ISPs, seemingly in the hope of opening talks that could result in new wholesale or other agreements to help “increase investment” and “bring ultrafast broadband to more homes.”

Gaist has launched a new “highly detailed” map for use by installers of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks, which claims to cover “over 200,000 kilometres of the country’s roads and pathways, using more than a billion high definition images to map the highway scape of every classified road in England.”

The mains fixed line and mobile telecoms operator for the Isle of Man (British Crown Dependency), Manx Telecom, has recommended that its shareholders accept a £255.9m offer from Basalt Infrastructure Partners II GP Limited to acquire the business. The move is likely to boost investment in their FTTP and 5G roll-out.

The Government has today confirmed which UK regions have so far secured £53m out of the £95m allocation that was made available to local authorities as part of the £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund last year (Wave 3), which aims to stimulate commercial investment in “gigabit capable” broadband networks.

The Scottish Government has today committed to invest up to £85m over 10 years in order to support a new Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal (BIGD), which among other things will aim to improve fibre optic broadband and 4G mobile coverage in poorly served areas. The UK Government will also provide up to £260m.

The Northumberland County Council in England has approved a new voucher scheme, which is designed to help alternative network (AltNet) ISPs to Openreach (BT) to access public funding in order to roll-out “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to premises that have not been covered by the existing project (i.e. rural areas).

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has announced that residents in the Poppleton area of York are the latest to get access to their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which as reported last week (here) has already covered 33,000 premises in the city and should reach 55,000 by 2020.

The Broadband Forum has today announced that the first five G.fast devices running at 212MHz have successfully completed their certification program, which tested the kit at speeds of up to 1.45Gbps and copper line distances of up to 400 metres from the distribution point (cabinet/remote node etc.).
