Microsoft Windows and XBox Updates Bug Hits ISPs BT and TalkTalk

Since the end of January a large number of BT and some of TalkTalk’s UK broadband customers have found themselves unable to get software updates and patches for Microsoft’s XBox Live, Windows Updates and Windows Store services, which stems from a data corruption issue that also affected ISPs in other countries.

Trial of 1Gbps 5G Mobile Network for UK Autonomous Vehicles to Start

The AutoAir project, which is supported by a £4.1m Government grant, has confirmed that the UK’s first independent 5G enabled trial of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) will go live this month at the Millbrook Proving Ground (Bedfordshire). Mobile broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps are expected.

Mobile operator Three UK has launched a new 3G / 4G supporting Mobile Broadband router and data plan called HomeFi that’s aimed at home users, which is one of the first such packages that we’ve seen to include “unlimited data” and at a cost of just £22 per month on a 24 month contract term.

Openreach Trial Limited UK FTTP Broadband Migration Discount

Openreach is to trial a special discount for their consumer friendly Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP tiers, which will enable providers in certain specific “Fibre First” exchange areas to offer free connections and cheaper rental so as to test or encourage migrations to “full fibre” lines.

Former Interoute Boss Appointed CEO of UK Full Fibre ISP Gigaclear

The former CEO of Interoute (one of Europe’s largest fibre networks), Gareth Williams, has today been appointed as the CEO of rural FTTP broadband ISP Gigaclear. Meanwhile the company’s Interim Chief Executive, Mike Surrey, will remain with the business until the end of March to ensure an orderly handover.

New ISP toob Planning UK Full Fibre Gigabit Broadband Network

A new Portsmouth (Hampshire) based ISP called toob has surfaced that claims to have secured enough investment to deploy a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network “at scale” across parts of the UK, which aims to serve businesses and homes. But there’s a strong Vodafone connection.

ISP TalkTalk Top 4.29m UK Broadband Users – Quiet on FTTH Rollout

The latest quarterly results from TalkTalk to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19) has seen the ISP add a further +44,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,287,000 (up from the +24k added in the previous quarter), although sadly there’s not much of an update on their “FibreNation” FTTH deployment.

B4RN Win Support from MP Tim Farron Over Loss of EIS Tax Relief

BT End 2018 on UK FTTP and Gfast Broadband Cover of 2.6m Premises

BT Group has released their results to the end of December 2018 (Q3 – 18/19 financial), which reports that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) UK ISP network has grown its coverage from 1.97m premises passed to 2.6m in the last quarter. Take-up of FTTP is 29.9% and G.fast just 0.88%.

Citizens Advice Claim UK Mobile Users Waste 2GB of Data a Month

The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that 71% of UK Mobile customers with SIM-Only plans are “overpaying for data they don’t use,” such as when connecting via 3G or 4G (mobile broadband). The estimated average amount of data “wasted” each month is 2GB, which they equated to a total cost of £800m per year.

Iceland Plan New Undersea Fibre Optic Link to UK or Ireland

The Telecommunication Fund of Iceland and Farice ehf, the operator of two submarine cables to Iceland, have signed an agreement to start seabed survey work on a new submarine fibre optic cable (IRIS) that could link Iceland to Europe via either Ireland or the UK.

Ofcom’s newest Q3 2018 UK consumer complaints report has revealed that, for the first time, ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Sky Broadband won praise for seeing the fewest moans. Pay TV and Mobile providers are also covered.

Arqiva Secure Contract to Build 4G Mobile Masts in North Yorkshire
