Cable operator Virgin Media are replacing their existing security solution for broadband customers with the new cloud-based software from F-Secure SAFE, which will be free for one year (£7.50 per quarter thereafter) and aims to protect customers from harmful apps, viruses and other online malware.

The latest annual telecoms Infrastructure Report update from Ofcom has claimed that 73% of UK homes and businesses are now within reach of an NGA superfast broadband (30Mbps+) connection, which is up from 67.9% at the last update in May (here) and 65% in 2012. Uptake has also climbed to around 4.8m customers from 2.1m last year (out of 21.7m total broadband connections).

Telecoms analyst firm Analysys Mason has warned that operators like EE, which will soon launch a new Home Fixed Wireless service using its 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) Mobile Broadband technology to help connect isolated rural areas in the United Kingdom, will face a number of challenges not least with the high cost of mobile data.

The latest Point Topic report reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers in Q2-2013 has grown just +0.7% (down from +2% in Q1) to total 656,500,000, which is the “slowest quarterly growth reported since 1998“. But the expansion of superfast fibre optic (FTTH, FTTC etc.) based connectivity has continued and now accounts for nearly 25% of all connections (up from 22% in Q1).

Welsh wireless broadband ISP ResQ (ResQNet) has apologised to customers after admitting that a mix of “technical issues” and becoming a “victim of our own success” (i.e. not enough capacity to meet demand) had contributed towards a series performance woes (slow service speeds) in rural areas.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has slashed the price of its unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service, NOW TV, from £15 to £8.99 per month in the hope of becoming more competitive with rivals like Netflix and LOVEFiLM (note: the 24 hour Sky Sports Day Pass remains £9.99).

Global telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent has developed a new solution – Micro-Nodes – that could bring broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps or faster to homes using existing FTTC (VDSL2) or G.Fast technology and by adopting a cheaper approach to the Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) method.

The Channel Islands Competition Regulatory Authority (CICRA) confirms that JT Global has agreed to open up access for rival ISPs wishing to deliver services over their new Gigabit Jersey network, which is currently rolling out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband platform across the Channel Island of Jersey.

Mobile operator and ISP EE (Orange UK and T-Mobile) has published its latest Q3-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base has continued its slow but steady growth to total 714,000 users (up +10,000 during Q3, the same level as Q2). Meanwhile 4G mobile customers have jumped from 687,000 in Q2 to 1.18 million now.

The Welsh Government has warned that it might need to launch a third Open Market Review in order to determine the extent of commercial Superfast Broadband availability, which follows concerns that initial predictions might have underestimated the expected pre-Digital Wales coverage of BT’s FTTC/P services.
