The boss of Charter UK, which is itself a provider of complaints management software, has today criticised the communications regulator (Ofcom) for being unable to handle individual complaints about landline, mobile phone and broadband providers and instead using two separate ADR schemes.

The European Commission (EC) has today moved to tackle the rising demand for Mobile Broadband and WiFi data traffic, which doubles every year and could soon reach over 1 Trillion MegaBytes per month in Europe alone, by removing the regulatory barriers that prohibit radio spectrum sharing and White Space tech.

The recent launch of TalkTalk’s new YouView TV (IPTV) service (full details), which is being included alongside the ISPs unlimited broadband and anytime UK calls “Plus” package bundle, will apparently also result in the creation of 500 new jobs; most of whom will be engineers. But big challenges remain.

Now Sky Broadband hopes to muscle in on the action by hiring action movie star Bruce Willis to help explain why, in a way that only he can, having Sky’s truly “unlimited” broadband is better than a restricted service.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has given notice of its plan to lodge a challenge at the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT), which aims to halt Everything Everywhere (Orange UK and T-Mobile) from an early deployment of superfast “4G” Mobile Broadband services over their existing 1800MHz radio spectrum.

The Norfolk County Council (NCC) will announce the winner of its £60m (estimated) Local Broadband Plan (LBP) contract next month, which aims to cover 90% of the county with the “highest possible levels” of superfast broadband by March 2015, but hardly anybody expects a Fujitsu win.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest quarterly consumer telecoms complaints data report. Overall complaint levels have been falling since last year, although the number of people complaining about how ISPs actually handle their complaints shot up during July 2012.

Point Topic’s Tim Johnson has told the Broadband Forum’s quarterly meeting in Bucharest that UK and EU plans to deploy superfast broadband are at risk of putting too much emphasis on headline speeds and “not enough on the user experience“, with 40 million homes in Europe still unable to get even basic speeds of 2Mbps (Megabits per second).

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a press advert for Sky’s (Sky Store) movie rental service after rival ISP BT complained that it would have required a significantly faster internet connection than Sky Broadband could deliver in order to meet their “available instantly” promise.

Consumers are being forewarned to brace themselves for yet more price hikes after BT confirmed that its standard UK phone line rental and call charges would increase next year, once its current price freeze ends. The move is also likely to trigger another round of hikes from rival broadband ISPs.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has announced that its unbundled (LLU) network of UK telephone exchanges has hit the 2,000 mark, which means that their Unlimited Broadband service is now available to 82% of households but the roll-out won’t stop there. Sky has today set itself an even bigger target.

A major fibre optic cable breakdown triggered serious routing problems for a multitude of different UK internet providers (e.g. Sky Broadband, O2, BT etc.) over the bank holiday weekend, which prevented broadband customers from reliably connecting to certain websites and other online services / servers.

Fixed Broadband Wireless ISP Kijoma, which covers parts of West Sussex, Hampshire and Derbyshire in England (among other areas), has expanded its network to cover the rural civil parish village of Tatenhill near Burton-upon-Trent in East Staffordshire. Grants are being offered to help connect homes, which is despite some initial funding woes.

The Competition Commission (CC) is to investigate Ofcom’s March 2012 decision to cut the annual price of BT’s Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and Unbundled (LLU) broadband and telephone lines for rival ISPs, such as TalkTalk and Sky Broadband.

Communications provider Daisy Wholesale has joined the first pilot of FTTP-On-Demand technology, which allows BT to deploy “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (Megabits) capable fibre optic broadband ISP speeds over their existing and slower FTTC lines (due to cover 66% of the UK by the end of 2014).
