Internet traffic travelling across the London Internet Exchange (LINX), which excludes data being passed by private interconnection (PI), reached a new record peak of 9.5Tbps (Terabits per second) on the Tuesday 14th May 2024 at around 8:25pm this week.

An unspecified number of Openreach’s broadband ISP and phone customers, including some Ethernet links, appear to have been disrupted in the Shropshire (England) town of Telford after the operator’s network was “badly damaged” in an attack. The operator informs that this “attack” is not being linked to cable theft.

The latest BT Group H2 FY24 results to March 2024 reveal that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 1 million premises to their coverage in the quarter to cover 13.812m, while EE’s 5G mobile covers 75% of the population (up from 72% in H1), the PSTN (analogue phone) migration won’t complete until Jan 2027 and Openreach is named “preferred bidder” for Type C Project Gigabit contracts.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has announced that, as part of their ongoing UK programme to modernise and consolidate the number of offices they have, they’ve decided to close their Enniskillen Contact Centre in Northern Ireland. The move is expected to result in the loss of around 300 jobs from the site.

Network builder and UK ISP CommunityFibre, which runs a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across London, as well as parts of Surrey and West Sussex, has today joined forces with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide “free access to 100% full fibre broadband” to eligible Londoners struggling to get online.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today revealed that they’ve now rolled out enhanced 4G (mobile broadband) coverage across 150 rural sites (up from 100 in mid-Feb 2024) as part of their commitment under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which aims to extend geographic 4G cover (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.

Network operator CityFibre, which have so far deployed their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.6 million UK premises (3.3m RFS), has today announced that they’ve completed their “primary” £17m deployment across the North Northamptonshire (England) town of Kettering.

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has published a new report that attempts to analyse the “user experience” impact of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) decision to open up their existing fixed broadband ISP network to wholesale (here) via a new business (NetCo), which is expected to be introduced during the second half of 2025.

Sources have informed ISPreview that the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has decided to extend the availability of their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) to include urban areas. The scheme has, until now, only offered grants to help rural properties get a 1Gbps capable ISP connection installed.

Network security researchers have published details of a new vulnerability that arises from a “design flaw” in the IEEE 802.11 WiFi standard (CVE-2023-52424), which is said to impact “all operating systems and WiFi clients” and allows an attacker to trick Wi-Fi clients into connecting to an untrusted network.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed broadband base grow to total 1.383 million customers (up by 52k in Q4 vs 39k in the Q3) and their mobile base reach a total of 18.638 million (up by 66k in Q4 vs 330k in Q3).

Mobile network operators can now deploy 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity across more stations and tube lines on the London Underground, which comes after the ongoing network roll-out was extended to include Paddington, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich on the Elizabeth line.

Several thousand of 1p Mobile’s customers in the UK are currently suffering from network connectivity problems, which appears to have started yesterday morning and remains ongoing today. At the same time, the operator’s website reports that they’re also having “issues with our customer service telephone system” (probably due to high demand).

Gigabit broadband builder CityFibre has today announced the completion of their recent share-based acquisition deal for alternative network provider and UK ISP Lit Fibre (here), which adds another 220,000 premises to their existing full fibre coverage (i.e. a predicted total of c.3.8 million or c.3.5m RFS) – rising to 300k once existing builds complete in 2025.
