Broadband network builder nexfibre, which shares some of the same parentage as retail UK ISP partner Virgin Media (VMO2), has been hit with fines and charges totalling £11.3k in Somerset and £30k in Devon (England) after the local courts found them guilty of various roadworks offences that “posed a danger to pedestrians“.

New customers looking to join either Smarty or iD Mobile, both of which are virtual mobile (MVNO) providers on Three UK’s network, may like to know that they’ve both slightly reduced their top SIM Only 4G and 5G unlimited data (mobile broadband) plans to £15 per month on a 30-day term. Both plans include the usual array of unlimited minutes and calls.

Network operator nexfibre has just expanded their 2Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network, alongside partner UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2), to cover an additional 24,000 premises in the Merseyside (England) borough of Wirral.

Merseyside-based ISP BeFibre, which is powered by FullFibre Ltd’s national FTTP network, has discounted some of their packages and moved to a fixed 12-month and 24-month pricing strategy in order to “give our customers much better value & assurance of what they will be paying for that fixed period” (i.e. the Be-Guarantee assures they won’t increase prices mid-contract).

The UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today awarded the £43 million (state aid) regional contract for Cheshire (Lot 17) in England to alternative network provider Freedom Fibre. The deal aims to extend their gigabit capable full fibre (FTTP) network to 15,000 additional premises in hard to reach rural areas.

Internet and web hosting provider Freeola has informed ISPreview that they’ve just become the latest on a small list of UK ISPs to launch consumer home broadband packages based off Openreach’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both 120Mbps upstream) download speed tiers.

The wholesale division of Virgin Media O2 Business (VMO2), which supplies UK broadband ISPs and network operators with connectivity services, has today launched new diverse fibre routes and high bandwidth services into the Equinix flagship datacentre site, Manchester MA5.

Internet provider Vorboss, which is investing £300m via Fern Trading to deploy a 100Gbps full fibre network (Ethernet and broadband) – dedicated to business – across central London, has been recognized for the third year in a row by the City of London Corporation (CoLC) as part of the Considerate Contractor Streetworks Scheme, for delivering “exemplary” work.

The UK telecoms, internet and media regulator, Ofcom, has today hit broadband ISP BT (including subsidiaries EE and Plusnet) with a fine of £2.8 million, which occurred after their investigation found the operator had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.

Internet provider Yayzi Broadband are preparing to make some big changes over the coming months, firstly by launching a Mobile (SIM) service and, secondly, by expanding the availability of their MultiGig (up to 2.3Gbps) broadband packages on CityFibre’s network to also work across alternative networks from MS3 and Freedom Fibre.

Alternative network builder and UK ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has today revealed their they’ve now signed up 30,000 customers to their gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) network, which is up from 28k a month ago. On top of that, their coverage has grown from 207,000 premises passed (Ready for Service) to 220,000 over the same period.

A new survey of 104 Ministers of Parliament, which was conducted by consultancy firm Cluttons and YouGov, has revealed that both Government (Conservative) and opposition (Labour) MPs are extremely pessimistic about the country hitting any of the current coverage targets for 5G (SA) based mobile and fixed gigabit broadband networks.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published a new paper that sets out its options and vision for how the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) could potentially be released and then shared between both 5G mobile (mobile broadband) and Wi-Fi networks (e.g. home WiFi).

The founder of TalkTalk, Sir Charles Dunstone, and fellow shareholders are reportedly preparing to inject around £180m of new equity into the financially troubled UK internet provider. The move would help to tackle the threat of two large debt repayments, which are due over the coming months and said to total up to over £1bn.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published a new study that attempts to rank 20 of London’s Boroughs based on the level of “Good Mobile Coverage” they receive from the UK’s mobile network operators. Overall, Southwark had the highest average levels of Good Coverage (76.3%), while Barnet had the lowest (48%).
