Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that they’ve partnered with leading charity, Age UK, to help raise awareness of the 3G switch-off and provide customers using older devices with “tailored guidance and support” to help with the transition to more modern (4G, 5G) networks.

Hull-based network operator KCOM, which has already deployed their own full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across a big chunk of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, has today confirmed that their new infrastructure sharing solution (i.e. giving rivals access to their cable ducts and poles) will officially go live on 1st August 2025. Network testing firm Opensignal has published a new study that examines the “striking gap” between the home broadband speeds users are promised by ISPs and the speeds they actually experience – “the biggest factor behind this disconnect is the in-home Wi-Fi environment“.

Broadband ISP Squirrel Internet has introduced their first 2.3Gbps (2300Mbps) speed unlimited usage packages for UK homes via Freedom Fibre’s network, which will set those able to access such services back just £55 per month on a 24-month minimum term.

Broadband-based live TV streaming service Freely, which is supported by major UK TV broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5 etc.) and is an evolution – not a replacement – of the existing Freeview service (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat), has finally revealed that they’ll be launching on a streaming media device via the Netgem TV platform. But you’ll need a new box.

Network operator CityFibre, which has so far built their 5.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.5 million UK premises, has today confirmed the completion of their “primary” £50 million build across the West Midland’s city of Wolverhampton.

New research from Broadband Genie, which surveyed 3,996 UK broadband customers, claims to have found that consumers who adopt packages from ISPs that harness alternative networks (i.e. not Openreach or Virgin Media based) could be getting twice the internet speed for almost a third (28%) off the price.

The UK telecoms and media regulator has today fined alternative rural broadband ISP Gigaclear £122,500 after they were found to have failed to “provide accurate and reliable caller location information to emergency services,” which could have made it more difficult for the police, fire and ambulances to find callers.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has this morning revealed the shortlist of finalists for their 2025 annual industry awards event, which sees a record of 50 separate organisations (broadband ISPs, network builders etc.) being nominated across 17 categories. Except the “Internet Hero” and “Digital Inclusion” categories, which will be announced later this year.

The UK communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has today published its Media Nations 2025 report, which reveals how linear TV viewing continues to decline in favour of broadband-based video streaming platforms (particularly YouTube and Netflix). But broadcast TV currently still accounts for the majority (56%) of in-home viewing (down from 57% last year).

The latest Q2 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 today have revealed that their gigabit broadband network increased by 114,900 premises in the quarter to cover 18.53 million UK homes. But related customers suffered another fall to total 5,643,500 (down by -51.4k in Q2 vs -44k in Q1) and O2’s mobile base also suffered a fall (albeit with positive results in wholesale).

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today responded to the UK government’s drive to wrap everybody under the age of 18 in cotton wool by becoming the “first major network” to launch a dedicated Smartphone proposition (mobile plans) for U18s, called “Safer SIMs” – part of its commitment toward “being the UK’s best network for families“.

The telecoms regulator has today revealed that UK broadband ISP and phone giant BT (inc. EE and Plusnet) have now refunded or credited £18m back to customers. This follows last year’s Ofcom ruling (here), which found that the provider had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the network capacity and coverage of their 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) services around a total of 700 postcodes across the coastal Scottish city of Dundee on the Firth of Tay estuary.

Edinburgh-based UK broadband provider GoFibre has today announced that they’ve begun to expand their new full fibre (FTTP) network into the rural village of Witton-le-Wear in County Durham. The build forms part of their state aid supported Project Gigabit contract with the government.

Network operator Netomnia (Brsk, Youfibre), which has so far rolled out their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 2.56 million UK homes (inc. 341,000 customers), has appointed industry veteran Matthew Skipsey to be its new Managing Director (MD) of wholesale ahead of an expected adoption by more ISPs.
